5w-40 oil good solution until Old Navy filter comes out?

All,

I've been reading through the archives and pondering this issue. I am aware of the CRD's issues with oil going into the intercooler hoses, and know that the Provent system is one way to solve them.

However, I'm wondering if 5W-40 synthetic oil would be a solution to this issue (at least temporarily, until Old Navy's CCV filter comes out on order). I have already advised my dad to change the oil on the CRD to Mobil 1 5W-40 diesel synthetic before the CRD goes on a trip to Missoula, MT next weekend.

What do you CRD veterans think? Any and all perspectives are welcome. This is one thread I've been reading through and using for reference...

All I can tell you is that I immediately changed to 5-40 European formula, but
I believe any 5-40 Syn with proper specs will do. Also do the snorkel mod
till you have a provent installed. I have nothing in my CAC hoses except
one dried smear from when the dealership put the first 300 miles on it.

Have run both oils, 5W40 will help but both pass through the CCV. Currently DC has 0W40 in it due to having an oil consumption test being done. From my experience, the CCV will pass oil but insignificant compared to the amount that was getting past the turbo seals. Start watching your air filter for any signs of dampness. All it took on mine was @ 20 miles of expressway driving in the rain to soak the air filter element with water and start sucking insane amounts of oil through the turbo seals.

Since the pour point is so low with synthetics, 5w40 would be a good choice for everyone, CCV issues or not. Heck, even 15w40 synthetic has a very low pour point. I am using the 5w40 now. It is within the specs of the manual and therefore doesn't allow DC to claim no honor on warranty.

Unless your CRD is based at Barrow, Alaska or Antartica, 5w40 will work year round and be a good choice.

I only wish it was my CRD. I own a Subaru Outback (see sig). Maybe in a few years I will pick up a used one.

RFCRD: Thanks for the tip on air filter dampness causing issues with oil being pulled past the seals. I just finished reading the "Damp Air Filter" thread and am wondering if that may be another big part of the eventual solution to sucking oil into the intercooler. Fortunately, this CRD lives in a desert climate with 300 days of sunshine per year. Winter precip is mainly drizzle and snow -- but it will visit me in the Puget Sound area and go through some definite rain squalls getting there and back. May have to implement one solution discussed there...such as the gauge.

Will the snorkel (elephant hose?) mod cause warranty issues? Seems like that would mess with the emissions controls if the crankcase is vented to the atmosphere. If so -- one reason to wait for a better system.

Post subject:  5-40 oil and the elephant mod

I changed to Amsoil 5-40 Euro at 500 mi and just installed the Elephant Hose Mod (EHM) 500 m i agao. I have 3500 m i on the vehicle and nothing in the Elephant hose (EH). I have run the motor up to 4K rpm in first and second, backed down hard in first and second and it is doing well.

As far as warrenty with the EHM I will deal with it if Zi have a problem, like remove the mod before taking to the dealership. Takes maybe 5 minutes if you are really slow to remove.

I switched to 5W40 right away after I got my CRD and I still get oil through my CCV open vent. It's better oil for the engine, but won't solve the problem.
