Just did my 25k oil change. The oil filters for my VW come with a new copper washer for the drain plug. I'm still using the original washer for my Liberty. Its not leaking (yet), but where do I get a new one? Also, my maintenance booklet says at 25k the "front and rear axle fluid" should be changed. Is this referring to the front and rear differential oil that I changed at 15k?

I bought a spare gasket from the dealer (@ $2). Interesting, they didn't stock the part and took them a couple of days to have one shipped in. Now if I can only find it in my toolbox when I need it. The fluids you mention are the same differential fluids that you did at 15K miles, and don't forget the transfer case. If you follow their schedule, axles & t-case fluids get changed every other engine oil change.

OK, now I'm confused. I changed the oil in the front and rear differentials following the instructions that "skrracing" posted in the Tech Articles Forum (see "changing front diff oil"). Is the front differential that is described really the transfer case? I changed oil in two places as described by skrracing. Is there a third place that needs to be changed? This is my first 4x4-so I'm still learning...

It's not the front diff, it's a 3rd component (makes it a 4X4). The transfer case is in the middle of the Jeep, connected to the tailshaft of the transmission. It is located roughly at the bulge in the floor under the driver's seat. You can look for the driveshafts going to both front and rear diff's that come together in the t-case. On the rear face of the t-case you will find two recessed plugs, top is the fill & bottom the drain. You will need a 10mm hex key and 2 qts of ATF+4 in a squeeze bottle with a hose to service this. When I did mine @ 12.5K miles, the t-case fluid was far worse condition than the axle fluids. When you service this also look for signs on seal leaks where the driveshafts connect. If they leak, you will see oil spray line on the underside of the floor.
