This post has been reopened since it is a safety issue...We realize that is might get L.O.S.T. in the Great Outdoors for some if not posted here. Of course, this does not mean that the CRD OWNERS should ignore the other section... ![]() ![]() ![]() The Main point of the issue was that when ya'll hear of any issues that are "safety related" to all KJs...make a trek to the General section and post there so everyone is aware. They don't bite ![]() |

Double posting for my CRD brothers and sisters, some of you late purchasers got lucky with new LBJs already installed: Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! Anybody have an March+ '06 to crawl under and get pics of the LBJs to see if there appears to be any difference? Here is the article from August 2 of the Toledo Blade, best information yet by far: toledoblade.com wrote: All Toledo-made Jeep Libertys built before March are being voluntarily recalled by DaimlerChrysler AG because the sport-utility vehicle has been dogged by front suspension problems that could affect steering.
Chrysler will send notices next month to an estimated 832,500 customers with Libertys from the 2002 to 2006 model years. All of the front suspension lower ball joints will be replaced for free even if they were changed in a related 2003 recall, company spokesman Max Gates said yesterday. The defective part was manufactured by a supplier, not the Toledo Jeep Assembly complex, he said. The part has now been fixed, but he declined to name the supplier. The lower ball joint in some Libertys could experience excessive wear and looseness, Chrysler said. The part may separate in extreme cases, resulting in a loss of steering control, it added. "This is a safety issue and really needs to be addressed," Mr. Gates said. Libertys have not been built with defective ball joints since March, but Chrysler had to wait to issue the recall until it had enough of the parts in supply to replace them, the spokesman said. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in January started looking into alleged defects. It has received 495 complaints about separation of the Liberty's front suspension ball joint, three allegations of incidents resulting in injuries, and one non-injury crash, the government agency said of its ongoing investigation. Three years ago, Chrysler recalled 438,000 Libertys to inspect and, in some cases, replace the same part. Contact Julie M. McKinnon at: jmckinnon@theblade.com or 419-724-6087. Post subject: | 3-06 LBJ pics |
My door tag has a 'BornOnDate' of 3-06...I could not get a top on pic with the wheel on to see if there is any vendor name or part number. Perhaps on my 1st oil change I can look a little closer, coming up on 4500 trouble free miles! |

I took my 05 CRD in for a check engine light which resulted in an EGR replacement. The service manager asked if I wanted him to place my order for the LBJ's. This was on 10/24/06 and I told him yes. I got a call back 10/26/06 and they are in his hands scheduled for 10/30/06. Pretty quick service I thought. |

I haven't received anything in the mail, but I was talking to my friendly service advisor and he mentioned it to me. I'm going in on Saturday to have them changed. |

The news article I read said it was to be mailed out in phases over a 10 to 12 month period, starting with the oldest Liberties first, as parts will be in limited supply for this same period due to having to replace over 800,000 of these sets... I'm going to get another winter/salt season on mine before I jump into replacing them. Mine are still good for now so why wear out the next pair ahead of time? ![]() |

I have an early 2006 from Nov. '05 I believe. I got my recall a month or so ago and just arranged to have it done last week. I had the F-31 done at the same time as well as the 18K service. Took about two hours. I called to make an appointment as I knew that some folks had dealers with parts availability issues. My dealer had them ready to go and gave me schedule times for the following two days. Remember that if you have an '06 from May or later they were shipped with the new ball joints and are not part of the recall. |

Remember that if you have an '06 from May or later they were shipped with the new ball joints and are not part of the recall. Sounds like you may have got lucky on the parts. I dropped mine at the dealer this morning for the F31 recall, LBJ's, and other service stuff. They are doubtful on getting joints this visit as they can only get 4 sets per week and have a list of owners which they know of already that need them badly. The service manager told me they are averaging @ 2 Liberties per week towed in with separated joints. Said it's too bad that they have little choice but to inspect LBJ's while in for service and let them go until next time if they are still safe. Mine were replaced with the old style in June and should be OK through another salt season. |
