built my own vent system like the provent,used a pvc body with the screw in caps on it. i used a four wheeler oil filter that fit inside of the pvc tube.filled the space below the filter with steel wool as a filter medium.the inlet come in below the steel wool and the outlet come out of above the oil filter.used brass screw in nipples of the right hose size.used hydraulic hoses of the proper size to connect with the engine connection. have about thirty dollars in my system. |

There are a lot of homemade devices that do the trick under most conditions. The one thing you need to watch is that if it plugs or freezes, then what??? The Provent and Racor are designed for minimal flow resistance and with automatic pressure reliefs so if it does plug, you don't blow the seals out of your engine. The way I see it, after spending close to $25K for this rig, wasn't going to chance a homemade CCV filter. |

Dont know about price but microchek makes a relief valve that should work for your filter. Might be worth looking into. www.microchek.com Look up the specs on the provent filter and somewhere it will say what their relief valve opens at. |

I'll second that motion. I'm paying more for insurance every six months than what the one-time price of a Provent is. That said, I'm not knocking those who try the elephant hose mod or other homemade filters. If you don't have the bucks for a Provent and have the parts for a homemade device on hand, by all means give it a try. IMHO, the worst choice is leaving the CCV as-is and doing nothing. But again, you do need to take the possibility of freezing/plugging seriously. The repair bill for a set of blown seals will make the cost of a Provent look like peanuts. |

Should also be aware that it goes beyond simple freezing/plugging. Very possible to suck ice pellets (from frozen condensate) into the turbine. Will definately ruin you day. |
