Well, I am picking up my 2006 CRD Tuesday and have been browsing the forum for awhile trying to glean some info. So far this has been a very useful forum. I am getting a little confused with some referances to diesel fuels. I have seen comments about "premium" B-stuff, and etc. So far my knowledge is limited to the service stations having "green" pumps that dispense the fuel but I don't recall any other ratings.

How do I know what to use, what is best, then where to find it?

tks

The "B stuff" is Biodiesel. Highly recommended for use in your CRD. You can check

www.biodiesel.org

to find a station that has biodiesel near you. Even a small amount such as B2 or B5 is good.

The main issue with ANY diesel is to get good clean fuel from a reputable station. Ask the Owner of the small mom and pop station and the convevinece store if they change the filters regularly on the diesel pump. If they look surprised at you, you might consider going elsewhere for fuel. The high volume truck stops ususally maintain the pumps well and have fresh fuel. As a truck driver, I would not recomment Pilot truck stops. They are a high volume discount fuel retailer that only is concerned with low price and not quality. I have seen bad fuel come from them many times. Most others would be fine. They will also get their hands on the new Utra Low sulfer diesel sooner than a low volume station. Seems to most here, that the new ULSD fuel will help deter the EGR problems some experience.

Very few stations show the Cetane rating of the diesel in their pumps. that said, a higher cetane rating is better. Many of us will put in fuel additive to help this and control any water in fuel, gelling in cold weather, and lubricity for the fuel system. I would recommend the main brands such as Power Service or Howe's Lubricator for that purpose. Well worth the added cost.

I would second most of what he said but would caution you that if you use over 5% biodiesel in your CRD it will void your warranty if Jeep finds out. I am not saying it is bad stuff, because I don't think it is. In any case, as you are in AZ-- there are only two places I have found that carry it in the state anyway. That is the main reason I don't use it-- and the warranty. Would like to see more of it.

I have yet to find any ULSD marked pumps in Phoenix. They all say LSD. Having said that, they are all switching over in the next few months to ULSD, so it should not matter in the future.

I have fueled up here at Shell, Circle K, Fry's, Mobil, and Cheveron. Shell seems the most consistent (but also kinda expensive, and still too inconsistent for my liking). Fry's got me the best mileage, but also the worst (but good price always). Circle K is always mediocre, but was cheap until recently. Mobil was horrible for mileage and performance. Mobil was also expensive and the diesel pump was colored yellow (instead of green), while the regular unleaded pump is green (almost causing me to put gas in the diesel). For that reason alone I will never go back to a Mobil station. I am going to try Safeway, as they have a low price.

In the end, I think it has more to do with the station and the upkeep of filters and tanks than it does with any particular brand of fuel.

If you do fuel up at a truck stop (like Flying J), then make sure you use the pumps for cars and not for semi's. If you use the pump the big rigs use-- be carefull as they are designed to fill the 150 gallon + tanks very quickly. You will overflow your tank and make a huge mess. If you must use one, barely squeeze on the pump handle. TtT
