Post subject:  Low Coolant Light

I have a question for you guys. I just had my EGR Valve replaced at the stealership and am on my third one now. My wife picked it up from the dealership on Friday afternoon. I drove it to work Friday night. I noticed the Low Coolant Light come on when I started it Saturday morning. I took a picture of my coolant resevoir to show you. Is it low? I'm not sure what the right amount actually is. I was told that the dealership has to change some of the coolant when they replace the EGR. Can someone please shed some light on this for me? Thanks in advance.

I would guess it's low since below the Cold Fill line (the ridge going around). Doesn't seem that low to trigger a sensor, but never can tell anymore. Even on Semi's, the low coolant sensor gets triggered when the coolant goes below cold fill line.

Hopefully, no air pocket left in coolant system. They should have done pressure test on system after assembly to get any air pocket out. Watch the temp gauge for a while and just add coolant to get the level to the cold full line. Should take care of it.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I am just upset that I go to the dealership for warranty work and come out of there with new stuff wrong. I have had repeat problems with DCX Dealer Service Areas.

Should try most VW dealers, local Toyota/Ford dealer is a great place to screw things up on regular basis and in another town near here the GMC/Chevy/Caaddy dealer is no place to take a car either.

The exact same thing happened to me. Picked it up after EGR replacement and had the same Low coolant light came on. Took it back to the dealership and they said to fill it up to 1/2 inch above the cold fill ridge. I asked them if I needed a special coolant and they said to just put water in it as it is rated to -35 degrees. So I did and everything is running fine. May not work for you in Michigan though. Hope this helps.

Post subject:  Fill Level

It's low. Keep in mind this is a pressurized surge tank, not a recovery tank as with most cars. Mine has never been opened, factory filled to the seam on the tank. Have never seen it change levels. It's not uncommon to get air pockets when you open the cooling system for repairs such as replacing an EGR. After the engine is run to full temperature (thermostat open) and cools, those air pockets will work their way to the surge tank.
