Took a rare vacation to the Puget Sound and San Jaun Islands this week. On firing up yesterday for the return trip yesterday I threw a CEL but the truck ran just fine. I had several shut downs and restarts on ferry transfers and a couple of pit stops but no troubles............until I broke the summit of Stevens Pass in the Cascades and started down with the cruise locked in at about 64 MPH. The tranny kept downshifting into 3rd. I finally cured the problem by shutting the cruise down. Powered it back up later in the trip and it worked fine the rest of the way. The CEL shut off after about 300 miles and plan on getting it read on Monday.
I had one other CEL that was related to a "faulty speed control reading" (PO725 & PO765). These had been preceeded by two experiences of cruise control creep! Anyone else seen problems like these or am I special?
I have seen something similar, but never threw codes on it. On the hills around here (locals call them mountains

) if I have the cruise on while going downhill, it will actually upshift o third. I've never had a vehicle do that, but I kind of assumed it is by design to keep you from rolling faster than the cruise. I just don't use the cruise on the big hills any more.

This is true, will downshift to hold/maintain speed if it senses downhill acceleration. Where this gets annoying on the CRD is the 5th to 3rd downshift which can feel very abrupt. Detroit Diesel/Allison programming will do the same thing with a late model bus. Some bus owners had this reprogrammed because DDC went 6th to 3rd plus the Jake brake engagement which about throws you over the steering wheel.
I had an even more bizzare sensation about a month ago. Was running with the cruise preset on @ 65 mph while climbing a long uphill grade. Traffic was slowing on the uphill so it punched it to avoid getting boxed in by some really slow stuff. Outran the slow stuff near the crown of the hill when I eased off to coast back to the cruise preset @ 65 mph. Was now on a long, steep downgrade where it wouldn't loose excess speed it own very quickly. It started bucking/stumbling badly until it slowed to the preset speed.
