Post subject:  questions before buying
I've been thinking about getting a CRD for awhile now and have been trawling through the forum to get some first-hand reviews. It has definitely been very helpful. I just had a couple semi-random questions left. Has anybody had any cold-start issues? I know it comes with a block heater, but what if I don't plug it in and leave it outside on a 0 degree night? I plan on garaging it, but I like road trips and camping trips. Also, how long do these take to warm up? In my experience iron blocks take longer to heat up so I was just curious.


Last question... anybody seen any for sale in the Indianapolis area? 8)

I had my CRD through last winter and while I generally pluged it in below 10 degrees there were times when I didn't and it seemed to start the same as when I did plug it in. I had quite a bit of temps in the sub 10 degree level last winter but not much below -15 degrees.

Welcome, there are several of us CRD owners in the Indianapolis area.

You are correct there is an electric heater for the block, as well as a fuel pre-heater on top of the fuel/water separator.
The Glow Plugs fire up quickly even in low ambient temperatures. My CRD has stayed outside in sub-zero temperatures overnight and the glow plugs warm up in three seconds and then I can crank the engine. She starts up with a little diesel bark for about 30 seconds and then quiets down.

It usually takes about 5~10 minutes of driving in winter if she has stayed out all night before I get full heat being generated through the vents.

If you want a new 2006 CRD in Indy you will have to really look for it. Otherwise, used or off-lease would be another option.

If price is right I will sell our's, but then I would anything if the price is right.

I'm in Northern New England. My '05 started all last winter (coldest -12F). I did not use block heater, or any fuel supplement. Last winter was "mild" and I would have used anti-gel had it gone down below -20f. #2 winter blend (all thats available here after Nov) causes about a 10% drop in mpg.

Warm up took about 5-10min to @ 45mph until engine was warm enough to go into overdrive at very cold temps; Heat took about 5 min or so. In general, with weather between 20 to40F it only take 2-3 min before I get heat when driving on a country road.

Also, CRD is excellent in snow/bad weather, but you MUST change out the oem tires. I put on Michelin LTX, however any good tire will do. The oem tires are in a word, awful, terrible, dangerous, slippery, useless, etc

Kahlo of Knightstown is where I got mine. They were o.k. to deal with.

What side of town are you on, ernestgj? Just curious.

Not a CRD owner but my pal runs an 05 CRD Sport up North here and had no problems starting it in the a.m. when it was NOT plugged-in overnight at -35C. So my assumption at 0, no probs.

IndyCRD- I'm in Terre Haute, but there's definitely none here. I'm a senior in college so I'm looking for a car for after school. Current car isn't practical enough (1977 280Z, new motor, paint, etc. etc...). Planning on heading out west to Colorado, California, or something like that after graduation so the CRD seems like a good choice.

I saw a 2005 used CRD with only 15,000 miles on sale by a private party on 41 south between Terre Haute and Vincennes as I was driving to Evansville.
If you want to take a trip down 41 South you can go check it out!

RFCRD- I need to sell or trade my car before I can buy the CRD. New or used would work for me. I will probably look for a used one because they've pretty much stopped making them and it would be a bit cheaper.

Just got my 2005 CRD. Do they all come standard with the block heater/fuel pre-heater? How do I use them? Where do they plug in? Obviously, I'm ignorant to the whole thing. This is my first diesel and I do live in sunny, warm Southern California. I do plan on taking the CRD to the cold for skiing this winter, and I get the feeling the heaters will come in handy!

Yes they all come standard with the block heater and fuel pre-heater.

The block heater has an electrical outlet tied with a zip tie around underneath the the plastic black bonnet.
To get to it, unscrew the yellow oil cap off. Tug with a hard pull at each corner of the black bonnet and it will make a pop noise as it uncaps of the posts.
Once you have the bonnet off, look at the side of the engine on the drivers side and you will find the electrical outlet all bunched up with a zip tie.
Once you unravel the cord you can place the bonnet back on and screw the oil cap back.
You'll need an extension cord as the electrical plug is only about 3 feet long.

The fuel pre-heater is built on top of the fuel/water separator unit. It's a part of the black housing on top of the fuel water separator. It's self contained and you don't need to do anything to activate it.

Actually my early 2006 came with the block heater cord tie wrapped to the dip stick.

Your best route for finding a used CRD is to find a website that allows you to search for Jeep Liberty and a keyword, such as 'diesel' in the advanced search options. cars.com has a good one here:

Also, once you work through the initial screens of autotrader.com, you can select 'fuel type' in it's advanced search functions.

www.autotrader.com

They both work very well as you can search for a radius from your zip code. Since they are so rare, I would recommend going the max search distance (before a total nationwide search) which I think is 300 or 500 miles for both web sites. :wink:
