Can anyone advise if there is a special tool required to remove the engine sump plug? It looks similar to a hex allen key but not quite the same.....maybe mine has been burred by the local dealership using a hex key?

If indeed its different I need to get one to take on a trip away with me into a remote area.

Many thanks in advance.

The US version uses an 8mm hex key. It takes some torque to pop it loose so I could see this being damaged. There is also a newer replacement with a raised hex. Sounds like your dealer owes you a replacement drain plug.

Just for the sake of future servicing, you may want to just get a set of hex key sockets. The front/rear differential plugs and engine oil pan all use hex keys. Hex sockets are a handy addition to a socket wrench set. I picked up a set of metric and a set of standard in neat plastic cases for under $25. Shop at a local Tractor Supply type store or check on the net.

Thanks guys for the info. If its a hex mine resembles a 'flower' with nice rounded edges.....

Will pick up a new drain plug and washer before I change the oil.

Cheers.

Do one better. Get the Fumoto drain valve that has been discussed in other threads. I got one installed on my CRD. Great little device. Just flip the lever and drain the oil. Can't be any easier!

Just did first engine oil change at 5715 (couldn't wait any longer).
I bought the Fumoto in anticipation beforehand.
Mine, 5/06, had a nice big 22mm drain plug, and was
very easy to get to. Nice big hole in factory skids to let
oil thru. No Mess. (Oil filter, different story.)
What's all the fuss about???????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's the problem???????????????????????????????????

Also checked out transfer case drain and fill plugs.
Oil was full. Plugs are very easy to get to and should
be no problem in the future. (no real hole in skids though).
It seems a Fumoto could be problem if you back into/over
something sticking up from the ground here.

Could someone please write back and tell me what I'm missing?

Bruno.....

I don't think you are missing anything Bruno, maybe just the point of my original post was to enquire whether the sump plug should be damaged (rounded through use of improper size hex socket) like the one on my KJ is.....
