I was browsing E-Bay and ran across a "Chip" that makes wonderful claims including turning down or off the EGR. It would be great if someone knowledgable woulr take a look at the claims and comment.

tks all

Added: Found additional info on the website regarding dyno testing of a Sprinter with a lot of detail that I simply don't understand. Again.....the experts can tell us if this data means anything to out CRD's.

Interesting...there's an * at the end of that line about the EGR, but it doesn't seem to refer to anything else. I would guess* that they mean they tinker with when the ECM brings the EGR online.

They're actually in my neck of the woods. I'll see if I can get in touch with them and report back.

Please let us know what you find out. Although I find it hard to believe that a chip ugrade is undetectable by the factory, the ability to set some tuning points on the CRD looks good. Would like to know if this chip mod is external or internal to the ECM. Remapping the ECM firmware sounds like a code rewrite of the CRD ECM to me - if it is, I would guess its a mod that would be immediately obvious to a dealer scantool.

I like the basic idea but tough to make work as long as we are members of DC's "Reflash of the Month" club. Think it would be more practical to control this from a plug-in style tuner box that can be removed before a dealer visit.

i did this inmotion tune...a stage 1 and turning down / off the EGR to my 05 passat tDI...have had it now for a little over 10k miles. no ptoblems, cel lights etc. You do havr to unplug your ecu and overnight it to them and they overnight return...i did insure the pkg...these ecu's are not cheap.

worked well for me

Was there any noticible improvements in performance and/or economy? The big questions is if the mods are really invisible to the dealer scan tool.

Perhaps someone from inmotion could join us on the forum.

I'm interested as well, especially in regard to any proven performance or economy effects.

Hi, all,

I spoke with Gunther for quite some time this morning about the tuning that they are able to do. I have to say I was impressed with the depth of knowledge that he has: he is clearly *not* someone who is just schilling something that they don't know much about. He knows what tuning can and can't do, what is street legal and what is for offroad use only...he is even familiar with why manufacturers may have purposely put a flat spot in the accelerator pedal when hard starting from a stop. So he is well-equipped to advise people on the benefits and costs of tuning the computer a certain way.

He is also able to offer the experience of his European counterparts, whose tuning he is selling here. Since they've had longer exposure to our engine, they've had a chance to fine-tune things for quite awhile.

But I'd rather let him present himself here. I invited him to join the forum, so hopefully we'll be seeing him here soon. I also intend to experiment with the tuning, and report back my findings here including before and after dyno tests if I can get them.

Best,

Here's the reply email i got from Gunter at InMotion;

"Hello,

Our most popular tuning is the Stage-2 which will raise your HP +35 and your Torque will be raised +49FtLbs. We also have an "Eco-tuning" for maximum fuel savings. this tuning raises HP +25 with +45Lbs of torque. We can turn off the EGR as well.

Gunter Heckman
www.inmotionusa.com"

So my question, since i'm no expert, is what's the benefit of turning off the EGR? What's the downside of turning off the EGR? Would you still need a ProVent if it was turned off? For $300 bucks, which is the cheapest moduler/chip/tuner option out there, i might just give this a try....

What are the EGR experts opinion?

NOT and expert opinion, but the EGR abd CCV are different sources of intake and sensor contamination. The EGR is a source of heat and soot while the CCV (Provent cures this) allows oil vapor into the intake system.

As far as I know those using diesel engines in all makes of domesticallt sold vehicles are finding or have found workarounds for the EGR and CCV contamination whether by disabling the EGR or removing it altogether.

The biggest question I have out the chip is "What happens when your dealer insists that a flash must be done to compy with warranty concerns?" Does this negate the computer chip upgrade? I quess the safest way to to the chip upgrade would be to get a blank ECU with your VIN Number loaded in and then have the InMotion chip download added. Then anytime you take your KJ to the dealer, you would have to put back in your stock ECU...

I hate to have the dealer perform any flashes on my CRD right now...it is running so good. I would like to get rid of the initial dead spot from a dead start, the EGR backed off and more performance.
