Flowmaster 40â€™s

The local muffler shop installed a Flowmaster 40 series.
At idle it is indiscernible from stock.
At cruise it is very close to stock.
Under acceleration it is not as noisy as the engine.
Under load it does not have the low frequency hum of the stock muffler.
It makes the diesel sound similar to a V6 gas engine under load.
I was the third CRD he had changed exhaust on, I am extremely pleased.

Too many things have and will change in the process of using fifty gallons to get an average fuel use number that is meaningful.

I talked with the guys at Brown Fabrication about muffler selection and they were the ones recommending the original series 40 for a diesel.

It is less restrictive and lighter than the stock unit. The gains may be inconsequential but it is still a positive.

My analogy to a V6 is wrong I can not accurately draw parallels to the sound generated under load or hard acceleration. “quietly authoritative” would be my best attempt after a couple of weeks. Don

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me if there is the "drone" at highway speeds? In my Mustang, the flowmasters were loudest at 60-70mph making long trips almost unbearable.

There is less drone than with the stock muffler, when the turbo is making pressure it made a deep base humming sound with the factory muffler.

With the new muffler there is substantially less interior noise under load, with the windows open you can almost hear the exhaust over the engine.

Even with this muffler there is no turbo whistle. That leads me to believe our CRD has significant exhaust noise attenuation with the turbo and particle-catalytic converter. This muffler just adds a slight rumble to it.

Is your vehicle with the factory muffler quiet besides engine noise except under load, then no exhaust sound only drone humming sound? Don

do know specifically which Flowmaster 40 fit up under there correctly? It'll just save me some time. I've got 12K miles on mine and I'm ready to do some mods. This is my third Libby, and the longest I've waited to change things.

Anyone tried no muffler, just strait pipes from the cat back ?

Turbo should kill most exhaust noise.

I put a Magnaflow on yesterday. It's a straight thru pipe with some noise reduction materials. Too early to know on performance, but the engine is still louder than the exhaust. I like it.
