| Post subject: | FINALLY - First Tank of ULSD |
This weekend, I was able to fill up with ULSD. For some reason, Colorado was really slow to come online with this stuff. So far I haven't noticed much of a difference except that the idle is definitely smoother and the highway engine sound is a bit quieter. Until I have someone follow me, I won't know if I'm still putting out black trails when I floor it - I kind of like that, though! As a side note, I drove a Dodge Nitro this weekend just to check it out. It had the 3.7L base engine. People think our CRDs have engine noise? I swear the CRD is quieter - by a long shot. I also got the feeling the Nitro is being marketed to the "bling" crowd, as the sales guy kept talking about how it was designed to really large rims. I'm a 42 year old professor - I don't think I look like someone who would care about that.... |

The second or third tank will be when you really get the ULSD due to what may have been in your tank from last fill. Enjoy the better fuel, I know the CRD does. |

In Kansas I noticed that we got ulsd this weekend. A local dealer told me that actually they have been getting ulsd for a few months now but have not labled it ulsd because they were using it to flush out the old fuel in the tanks. And they were not required to have it availiable until mid October. |

What color is the ULSD? I just filled up my CRD this past weekend and noticed the fuel was clear which had me take a second look at the pump to make sure the right fuel was going in my baby's stomach. |

Should be clear, no different than the old LSD fuel (unless you have been getting dyed/offroad fuel). You would more likely notice less diesel fuel odor. This is my 3rd tank of the ULSD according to the fuel station where I have been buying recently. Told me they still have the 500ppm/"for non-'07 use" caution stickers on the pumps because it's been too cold to properly clean and resticker the pumps. I have noticed it's been more difficult to get it to blow black smoke. |

We have both LSD and ULSD here. The ULSD is about $.10 higher in price. It seems like almost all of the pumps are marked now with the appropriate stickers. |

I haven't noticed any price increase. Diesel prices have remained steady here. $2.39 (if you're lucky!) - $2.59. |

I'm on my third tank of ULSD, too, and I love the stuff! A lot quieter ride, and more zip, too! My city MPG's also shot up about 3 miles per gallon on the last fill-up. I just had my second EGR valve replaced the other day (2nd one in less than 12k miles). Didn't I read a few posts somewhere in this forum from people saying they actually got better miles per gallon with a bad EGR? If so, I'm wondering if that's the reason my MPG's went up, instead of the new fuel? |

Prices seem to be about the same here - $2.40 or so. B100 is about 20 cents higher, but I bet the competition of having ULSD readily available will force them to bring down the bio prices a bit. I was so mad when our local bio B100 distributor shot its prices up to $3.80 - total gouging. |

The first tank of ULSD I ran was in CA and avg just under 30 mph at 70 mph. My best ever. However, I only drive 70 in CA. In AZ I do 85 so that my influenance my data. |

You noticed that B100 got stupid expensive too? The last time I got any B100 it was $3.50/gal. The B20 pump was @ $2.89/gal when I drove by on Tuesday. Would love to burn more bio but no way I will pay that much of a premium, just keep a 5gal can on hand to slicken things up. I have been buying ULSD from the little "no-name" corner service station (you know, the type of place we are told to avoid for diesel fuel) for $2.45/gal. They buy from Marathon or Shell. The Speedway station a mile away has been @ $2.69/gal for the same Marathon product. This little guy gas station is doing good business, it's all you can do to get in line at their pump. Seems like every medium/light duty diesel in town is buying there. |

ULSD has been available at ATL area Shell stations for a few months, and it does do great things for economy, emissions, smoothness, as mentioned above. I used it on a trip to NC a couple months back and it was like driving a sedan, even quieter than on Bio. It also helped me un-jell my B100 last night. Prices are running about $2.60 at Shell (a few pennies more than #2 at other places and about 20 cents more than gas). The local fleet dealer who sells B100 at 2.40-ish just started selling B20/ULSD at the same price "so their customers wouldn't have any problems when the weather got cold". I like their customer-driven attitude but unfortunately, this customer was too thick-skulled to take them up on it in Oct. |

I don't know if its the ULSD, or winter blend, but my mileage and performance has been in the crapper the last couple tanks. |

Mine has also, but I was blaming it on the fact that I just put on 245/75/16's with an "E" load rating. Each tire weighs in at about 50lbs (20lbs more than stock) |

When exactly is the ULSD supposed to be mandatory in the pumps? It is the ULSD that is becomming manditory right? Think that the ULSD will help eliminate our EGR problems? |

It has been mandatory since October 15, 2006. Everything since is ULSD. I think the station owners are just idiots and not changing the stickers. |

Yeah, that was my understanding of this as well. Aren't they required by law to change the stickers though? |

I must have been getting really crappy diesel in the early months of 06, because I noticed several times the diesel had a slight yellow-ish/orange tint to it. |
