07 Wrangler CRD Importation into USA?

Post subject:  07 Wrangler CRD Importation into USA?
I thought I would get a discussion thread going on this if anyone has looked into importing back a '07 Wrangler CRD.

Some of the other manufacturers such as BMW allow an overseas purchase, and then importation into the US as a "used" classification vehicle. I'm wondering if this would be a way to get a Wrangler CRD into the US with the CRD engine.

Thoughts?

Well I think the epa won't let you do it. Most likely the Wrangler CRD doesn't have particulate traps and the other junk needed to pass the 2007 regs. But if you had enough money you could:

1. Buy and register Wrangler here.
2. Buy a CRD Wrangler in europe of the same type and color.
3. Find "shady exporter" and ship it to the US.
4. Switch the license plates once you get it here. Probably take off the CRD badge as well.


I don't think anyone would ever know the difference- just don't get pulled over.

I'll tell you what- if I win the lottery I'll give it a shot.

There may be a way to do it, but I dont know of any. There are reasons they will let you bring something like that over, but not to stay though :evil: Race cars, and test vehicles get a pass, maybe you could get a dealership to "hire" you to do a long term test on one, say a 300,000 mile durability test? :lol:

It may be possible to buy one with a salvage title, or without an engine, rebuild it with a CRD and get a builders title for it or something like that though, it might be worth looking into.

Check this out, may be different for other states, but after reading this it seems like it may be possible depending on your states regulations etc.

The easiest way to do it is to get stationed overseas in the U.S. Military and while over there, purchase one. Uncle Sam will ship it home free of charge. :lol:

??? The rules must have changed. When I was in the Air Force (back in the late 80s) we could only bring a vehicle back from Germany if we had brought one with us from the states. (And even that often was not allowed for the single enlisted.)

I looked into this a 9 or 10 years ago, at that time they allowed once in a lifetime import of a vehicle that doesn’t meet current EPA standards, I don’t know if you can still do this or not.

Mostly on rebuilts or imports they will require a test. Now,there are a LOT of ways to pass a test...

How about a tank of Biodiesel? won't beat the NOx but will lower everything else. I'd guess a CRD with a tank of 50% ULSD and 50% good BioD would have a fair shot. Maybe some additives could help. Or some $50 bills.

When I reported to my first duty station of Ft. Richardson, AK. I noticed all sorts of BMW's and didn't know how a soldier could afford it. That is when I learned how this game is played. Lots of guys would buy nice muscle cars here and then sell them at the German duty station for more than what they payed for them. Then they would buy a nice Beemer and have Uncle Sam bring it home for them.

If Canada has the Wrangler CRD why not buy it there? I grew up in ND and knew several farmers/oil companies that would buy work trucks in Canada and take advantage of the favorable (at that time) exchange rate. I was told that if the vehcile was built in the US originally they didn't have to pay duty when they brought it back. I was also told that they just brought the paperwork to the DMV, paid the applicable taxes, and drove away with there plates. I have no idea if any of this is accurate but it would be worth checking out if someone was serious about a CRD Wrangler.

Yeah, that's right. Aside from succes, reputation, and more money, what reason would DC have to sell something to people who want them? I'm sure the CJD Dealers in Siberia and Timbuktu will love their allotment of CRDs.

I wasn't aware that the CRD JK wasn't going to be available ANYWHERE in N America. That seems...stupid. I admit I don't have a degree in marketing and I'm not privy to the inner workings of DC but COME ON. Not making this vehicle available in NA is like Ferarri saying that they aren't going to make anymore red cars, a bonehead, stupid thing to do.

If I wasn't clear I really, really, really think that DC should make these available.

This is a good thread. I personally would like to continue to pow-wow on how to get one the new CRDs into the country, and I have a feeling we might just figure out how to pull this off. I'll be making "some calls" this week. I used to export cars... many years ago..

But should this thread be in this section of the forum? Might be easier in the "Jeep Diesels" section? Just don't want it to die in the Libby CRD forum. What do you guys think?

Can we move the whole thing over without loosing the messages?

But I do agree it probably should be in the Other jeep diesel section.
