I just picked up a 2005 Liberty CRD Limited last night. BTW, it has 36,000 miles on it. :) So far I've just driven it home and around town a bit, but I love it.

I have been reading up on all the issues/upgrades and was just looking for some advice on what to do first?

The first thing I plan to do is change the oil. Obviously, since this is my first diesel, please excuse my ignorance, but do I need anything other than the oil and filter?

What about a Provent? Should this be high on my list as well? Is there a good parts list and or how-to thread?

How about the tranny fluid and filter?

Finally, I am going to be needing tires soon... How long are the stockers supposed to be good for? For now I will be staying unlifted, so any recommendations on stock replacements?

Welcome, and congradulations on the CRD purchase.

What to do first? Research the warranty and maintenance history on your Jeep (a dealer might be willing to run the VIN# for you). Look under the hood for tell-tale signs of updates such as TSB stickers. You need this baseline to know what to do next.

Second, look for chronic issues that a dealer may have called "normal" such as oil in the Charged Air Cooling as an example. And the answer to adding a Provent is yes (or open vent).

Third, dig into your owners manual for maintenance recommendations. A 36K miles, if that trans hasn't been serviced it should be done given the track record of failures when connected to a CRD. Personally wouldn't push the oil change intervals much past 6K miles given the soot loading from the EGR engine. Best to use a quality CI-4/CI-4+ rated 5W40 synthetic diesel engine oil with a premium filter.

Finally, research this forum for the clasic CRD problems. Many cases the fixes are stupid simple and will save you a lot of aggrevation.

First thing I would do is go to a Jeep dealer and have the 7/70 power train warranty transfered. It costs $150 but just might pay off big time :!:

I actually did this before I bought it. It was at a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealer so they did the services.

I actually specifically asked about the warranty and if there was any transfer fee. The dealer who sold me the car said no. Then, I sat down and read the manual and found out that there is a $150 fee. So I plan to call the dealer first thing tomorrow to get them to pay for this.

You might not have to pay the $150 if you brought it from a DC dealer not another auto trader or privite owner.

I always do a complete tuneup when I buy a used vehicle.

Here is what I would do if I were in your shoes:

1. Replace air filter (pulling filter takes 30 seconds and if it looks ok, you should be ok). My filter was very filty/dirty at 15k miles. If it has a K&N filter, remove it and install OEM air filter. K&N filters not good for MAF

2. Check auto tranny level. Dipstick often pops out (even with TSB fix) and I have had to top off twice in past 9 months.

3. New fuel filter

4. Use a tank or more of B20 fuel to clean out fuel system

5. PROVENT FILTER ASAP or elephant hose mod.

6. Dump dealer 0w-40 oil and put in a good 5w-40 diesel

7. Good time to change tranny, diffs, and transfer case fluids...do it yourself or you'll get burned at dealership $$

8. Check spark plug gap and replace cap and rotor<---JUST KIDDING :-)

My CRD has over 20,000 miles on it.

It was build in early May 2005 and has never had anything done under warranty. The only work done has been oil and lube (all by the dealer). I have had a "slight" shudder at 53mph on occasion, but the overall performance has been so good it has not been worth addressing. I am a very happer CRD owner.

Do the before mentioned stuff. Also the Ball joint recall. I would hope a dealer would do this before they sold it but might want to check!

Next, get it to the mountains (or hills) and have fun.

i bought my crd back in august,from a small dealer,i.e. not a dc dealer.it's a 2005.what warranty do i have from dc?

It's all in the manual, all the 2005s have a 7/70 warranty, you have to transfer it at the Jeep dealer I believe to get warranty work done.

I also found out that you have to get the warranty transfered within 30 days of puchasing the vehicle.

And yes, it is $150, even if you buy it from a DC dealer.

7/70 is the powertrain warranty. 3/36 is the bumper to bumper.

There is no action required on your part for the 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty, except the title being in your name.

The 7/70 has two requirements: (1) you pay the $150 transfer fee through any Chrysler Dealership; and (2) you are the second owner of the CRD.

If you are the third (or later) owner, then you can not transfer the 7/70 powertrain into your name.

While the time interval of the powertain warranty may vary from '05 to '06, the requirements are the same for each year.
