I have heard from a few people that Mercedes makes the CRD Engine but I know that they are made by VM Motori. When I told someone that fact they replied with this.........."VM Motori is producing the engine under licence for Mercedes Benz, actually.
Thanks," :?

What do you guys think?

VM has the engine on their website as their product. When I was shopping for mine, sales guys represented it as a Mercedes product, but I don't think it is - not even the design.

There is nothing Mercedes about the KJ's CRD engine. It's designed, built, tested, everything by VM Motori in Cento, Italy.

Pretty sure Detroit bought part of VM, and then Diamler bought Detroit.

VM Engine all the way...Detroit Diesel is a partner of VM...DC bought Detroit Diesel...so Mercedes has an interest thru DC but had no hand in the design.

I think uneducated Jeep Sales People get a little cocky and refer to the KJ as having the same setup as the WG Grand CRD's.

WG Grands run the 2.7Lt Merc engine, complete with Merc symbols on the Radiator hoses as well

I'd prefer that 5 cyl Merc engine in my KJ actually.

VM is VM, but funded by various other companies such as the above mentioned posts.

The REAL DEAL direct from the VM website.
In 2000 VM Motori, together with Detroit Diesel Corporation, became part of the DaimlerChrysler Group. In 2003 the share packet of the Company was defined as follows: 51% Penske Group and 49% DailmerChrysler Group.
The Cento plant has continued to grow and now covers an area of 85,000 mq of which 50,000 mq are roofed. Annual production capacity is for over 80,000 engines. Our mission, to which over 1000 employees remain devoted, is still the same: to design and produce quality products

And here's where I got it
http://www.vmmotori.it/en/00/01/09/index.jsp
:D
If you browse the VM site you'll see a 3.0L V6 CRD engine. http://www.vmmotori.it/en/01/00/01/dettaglio.jsp?id=9

Yup they'd say their mother's pace-maker was from Mercedes-Benz if she had a window sticker on her back and it'd help them make another sale.

The only (slight) parallel in the KJ to anything from Mercedes, and it may possibly not even be identical to the MB setup, is the ESP on the '06's.

It's very expensive for, and unlikely that, MB will component-shareby retro-fitting Chrysler models that existed before or around the time of the merger. ESP is an easy addition to any vehichle and it's a also marketing bonus that lets them brag about safety (and catch up with many other auto-makers).

New models developed post-merger are where you've seen and will be seeing shared platforms and components.

Also it seems to have a Ate Brake system and lots of Bosch Computers and stuff. All products that I see in my Benz's. But that doesn't make it a Mercedes Engine.

Bovie. A few months ago I was at a Sterling truck dealer. Sterling is the new name for a formerally heavy duty line of Ford trucks that was bought by DC. The engine had a STAR cast into the block. The service manager said it was a Detroit engine that now carries the star. Is it a Mercedes engine since it has the star cast into the block :?: Also Does anyone know anything about the new DC 3.0L v6? Could it be VM's 3.0L v6 who is partially owned by DC :?: :?:

Remember we must think Gloabally

The new MB V6 is quite a bit different in one way, and that is the VM has a cast iron block and the MB doesn't. Other things are different such as the degree angle of the V, the software package and a few other things.

Wouldn't that be a kicker - a VM 3.0L V6 with a Mercedes Star on it.... OldNavy, I found that VM Motori offers the V6 in both Aluminum and cast iron blocks - its in a footnote near the bottom of the engine details.

The only easily identifiable visible difference I could find is that the VM Motori V6 appears to have 2 separate turbo's, one on each exhaust bank, while the Mercedes seems to have a single turbo, mounted on top of the V6, with an electrically driven vgt instead of a vacuum driven acutator.

The new grand Cherokee V6 CRD is the Exact same engine that is in the 2007 M, R and E Class CDI's. Something like 210HP and 379fp torque. A Sweet engine, that from what I can see out preforms out VM 2.8ltr in every function in the same way that our engine compares to the 2.7ltr MB Engine in the Dodge Sprinter.

Our VM 2.8ltr has a cast iron block with a aluminum head Right? or is it all aluminum.

Well anyway it seems like the engine itself is pretty good and reliable just wish the 545RFE's were as good! :D

The 2.8 CRD is pure VM. The iron block is very similar to the earlier 2.5L VM pushrod direct injection diesel used in XJs, some older Range Rovers, Vauxhalls etc in the European market.
