I was talking with a diesel shop and they asked me if my CRD Libby had a water separator for the fuel. I didn't know and they said i should ask my dealer, my dealer won't know so I am asking on here. They also recommend a better fuel filter because the injectors are so fine on CRDs anything pretty much could plug them up and cause headaches. What micron of fuel filter is stock and whats available? They also recommend an additive, I forget what its called but they really really recommend it, its also safe in the CRDs, I think I will pick up a bottle, it treats 940 liters for $40 CDN. I will post what it is when I get it. Thanks.

The water seperator and Fuel Filter are the one unit on the CRD. There is a water sensor that trips a light on the dash when there is water in the water seperator, consult your owners manual for better info.

The additive is probably power service, I use it when ever I get a full tank, not a big deal if you forget though, its a good insurance measure...especially in winter.

The stock fuel filter is a 3 micron unit. About the finest widely available is a 2 micron filter, and you might use one as a secondary filter, with the stock filter as a pre-filter, but I don't know why you'd want to mess with that. 2 is not so different than 3 to do you a lot of good, and 3 microns is pretty tiny already.

Two reasons for adding another filter - reliability and convenience.

Stock filter is a MAJOR PITA to drain and replace. Bad enough in your own garage or driveway, but I wouldn't want to attempt it out in the boonies on a long trip, or on the side of the road at night. Another filter ahead of the OEM, in a more accessible location where you can easily drain/replace/bypass it, would in worst case when it clogs still leave you with the stock filter to get you home. Been there, done that. :cry:

Also cost. OEM filter will run upwards of $30 or better, aftermarket filters half that or less.
