Post subject:  800 mile trip coming up after a CEL code P0401

I'm having a bit of a dilemma... I'm headed on an 800 mile trip tomorrow and have just had a CEL code P0401 thrown indicating a flow problem with the EGR. The dealer has one on order, but it will not be installed by tomorrow. What happens when the EGR fails? Are we talking limp mode or just bad mileage?

Thanks for any information you can offer.

Shut the car off, wait about 5 minutes for the EGR cleaning routine to complete and for the FCV to open 100% and the EGR valve to close. Reach down and unplug the electrical connector off of the EGR valve and the FCV. This will keep both from operating and from the EGR possible getting stuck open (stuck closed is better). You'll get 3 p-codes associated with it - plug the connectors back in before you go to the dealer and two of the 3 codes should heal themselves momentarily. Mileage might be somewhat worse but not terrible.

Thanks MrMopar64! This is just what I need. Should I do this after the next CEL or before the trip?

Also, to ensure that I get the right plugs, is there a picture somewhere online that shows the plugs for the EGR and FCV?

Again, thanks for your help in this -- it saved a bunch of worry on the trip.

After the 800+ mile trip, the Liberty brought us home safe :D . While the CEL came on again, it also went out after awhile.

Still waiting on the new EGR. I think I've seen in other posts that the EGR should be changed with the FCV as a pair. Does anyone have any info on this?

Thanks again!

The flow control valve is most likely the issue but they have been changing the EGR out of wishfull thinking as it is a much cheaper part. The computer diagnostics don't distinguish between the 2 parts. So they start with the cheap parts first. I guess if it were our dime we would do the same thing. When our CEL for the EGR came on we were in S. Carolina and , the dealer we stopped at checked the codes and said don't worry and drove back to Missouri with the cel light on. We got better fuel economey with the broke egr than we do with it fixed.
