Hi, I am thinking of selling my 2005 Sport CRD. KBB gives me a horrible price of around 13k for the car on trade in. I am gonna see what CarMax will offer today. The ones I have been able to find for sale seem to go from 18k up. Since mine has 30k miles, I am probably gonna ask a little less than that.

What do you think would be a fair asking price?

2005 Sport CRD Base
30k miles
Only extras are the jeep rubber floormats and cargo area mat and a wheel cover.
Its the khaki color.

I am thinking of selling (hate to) because we are considering getting a large travel trailer, and I cant tow it with the Jeep.

I'd get on Ebay and watch all of them I could find. Find out what they are selling (and not selling) for. I haven't seen a used CRD for less than 17,000 myslelf.

go to www.nadaguides.com for a value on your CRD, they seem to be more realistic than KBB.

I had heard from others that CarMax would be fair, but they offered a severely cut back price for my wife's mazda. Their web site gave a reasonable price, but in person they offered the equivalent for poor condition, even though the mechanical review of the vehicle found no issues (and the thing was totally cleaned and detailed.)

Bigcanoe:

Don't know where you live, but I got a guy here in CT looking for a used CRD'05.

This guy's my friend, but I still wouldn't tell him to expect a used CRD for $13k. I'm guessing, but you should be able to get $15k easy.

good luck!

Ken - you should never sell a car to CarMaxx, they rely on ripping you off to mark-up and sell your car to others, literally on your dime. The very same pre-owned cars they ripped off from other people are sold to you on their dime. They (and all car dealers) hand everyone a bunch of bologne about how you have to deal with lots of phone calls and other negative stuff selling it on your own. They are just taking advantage of your state of mind at the moment where they see you are excited and anxious to get something new to drive. Cars are a big passion for lots of people!

Reality is they only pay you the trade in value (black book) which is WAY below it's private party or retail value.

Several times I have (just for kicks) gotten trade-in appraisals. Each time I sold each car for well over $5,000 (in one case $7,000) more than the trade-in.

Also, each time I sold the car in just 3 or 4 days. Price it right and it sells fast. A week or two of phone calls and a little light negotiation is certainly well worth putting that kind of cash toward a next down payment.

How do you go about selling a car that you have a loan on? Would you expect someone to pay you the asking price, without title in hand?

Actually it is easier and safer for both if you go through the lein holders. They handle the titles, and the seller & buyer do the trade.

He can buy ours for $18,000 with only 18,000 miles on her.

Yup, exactly ... ANOTHER dealer scam. They try to imply that they can buy you out of your loan and that's all the trade is worth. Usually, if you put a decent down payment and haggled even just a decent price when you bought it, the the trade's worth far more than the pay-off.

Some of my cars had loans on them. You contact the lien holder and find the pay-off balance and your account number as the ad begins running. THe pay-off is good for 10 days. The person who buys the car from you (or their lien holder) will give you two checks ... one payable to the lien holder with your account number on it and another to you for the difference. The lien holder either sends you a letter of release (if you hold title) or signs the title over directly to the new purchaser (if the lien holder holds title).

Car dealers use the oldest, lamest excuses to try and take your money from you, and a lot of people are too sincere (and distracted by the new car they are buying) to question the dealers shady motives.

Where are you? The two used CRD's I've seen here sell really quick - like overnight. I think they go to Cali where you can register a used CRD but not a new one. If you are close to one of the states that didn't allow new CRD's, you might put it in the classifieds there are see what happens.

I'd say out here you could probably get in the mid-upper teens for that combo, but used cars are always seem more expensive on the West coast.
