What Battery To Get???

My trusty CRD is getting a bit hard to start on these colder mornings...runs fine just sluggish turning over so I suspect it's finally time to change the battery (still the origianal). I'm tempted to but the same Opima brand back in as it's lasted quite well but would be interested to know what others are doing. I just turned 50K miles and almost 7 years.

Sears P-1 Platinum. Great battery with a great warranty. Pricey, but worth it IMHO.

My original Optima only lasted 3 1/2 years. I replaced it with another Optima, it lasted only 3 years :furious:

Both of my CRDs are now using the Sears P1.

My CRDs crank faster now than they ever did with the Optima.
A common lead acid battery would be cheaper, but I like being free of corrosion under the hood that the AMG technology provides.

Old Optima's were made in Colorado, New Optima's are made in Mexico - Quality's not the same

Sears P1 is the best - but a bit over $200

the Costco - will last at least a couple of years (probably as long as the new Optima's)

Go with the P1 and be done with it. I had my Optima replaced three years in a row under warranty because of a bad cell in each case. The Optima Quality went to crap.

O'reilly super star paltinum. $125 with a 3 years nation wide warranty, 850CCA and 1050CA. 2 winters and still running strong.

Yeah, Costco all the way. Regardless of how long they last, the Costco warranty ensures that I will have 9 years worth of Kirkland batteries for the same price as Sears are charging for one.

The probability of the Sears, or my CRD, lasting this long is slim.

Of course there is this risk but my assessment would be that it is insignificant given that there are many other components on this vehicle that have a much higher risk of leaving me stranded.

Yeah but only get stranded once unlike the 4+ times with the costco battery.

I guess it depends on your personal circumstances and how you define stranded. 90% of my startups are either in my driveway or the car park at work and I wouldn't regard either of these as being stranded, rather a minor inconvenience. Of the remainder the vast majority are low risk warm starts.

I'm also kind to my batteries. Most starts are followed by at least 20-30 minutes of non-city driving.

Now if I was doing a lot of road trips, off roading, working at remote locations etc. I may view things differently.

Now, OTOH, I suspect there is probably some quality issue with a battery that only lasts 23 months and this service life is not typical else Costco would never be able to offer the warranty they do. I also suspect that, since they track all purchases, if I returned a battery under warranty every two years they would start to ask questions about what I was doing with it.

I have a AUTOCRAFT Gold P/N 34-2 from ADVANCE Autoparts. It has 800 CCA and 1000 cranking amps at 32 degrees F.

Whatever battery you get be sure it meets the requirements for our CRD's. These Diesels need lots of cold cranking amps and most batterys do not have the power needed. I dont recall the minimum but the AUTOCRAFT is approved.

SORRY ... I disagree. Diesel engines require more CCA than gas engines. That is why full size diesel trucks have two batterys.

Yes 3/4 ton and above do,your does not.Your glowplugs most likely draw more amps then your starter does.
