fuel economy

Just curious what everybody is getting.
I am getting about 19 mpg at 4100 miles with 60/40, city/highway driving. I am starting to wonder when my mpg is going to go up.

fueleconomy.gov has a great way for everyone to keep track of their fuel economy and everyone elses. It would be great if we all did this.

Fuel economy on an "unbrokein" diesel can be a bit frustrating. In my CRD, my milage improved somewhere around 10,000mi. My 2001 Dodge Cummins took about 22,000 and my GMC Duramax markedly improved at around 16,000. What some recommend is to work the diesel hard a couple of times after routine breakin, like pulling something, to get the engine good and hot and help seat the rings. Actually, my tractor had specific instructions as to hooking something like a disck or plow and pulling it to help seat the rings and break in the engine correctly.

I just did a 500 mile hi way run, and hit 29MPG That was with the cruise set at 70 I have 32K on my CRD

How's this for crappy mpg's.........On our recent 2,000 mile (round-trip) adventure up north to Indiana, the best we got was 22 mpg's, and that was pure highway with the cruise control set at 75 mph. I know that the "winterized" fuel probably has something to do with it, but when other folks are getting 28+ mpg's, can the winterized fuel make THAT big a difference?

Under "normal" city driving around Houston (stop-go-stop-go-stop-go), I've been getting 18 mpg.

Just turned 13,000 miles with 2 EGR valve replacements so far.

The difference between 70 and 75 probably cost 3-4 mpg - it's real sensitive to spinning faster than 2000 rpm.

Tire pressure makes a huge difference. I run 38-40 psi and I get 27 mpg highway. If I run 32 psi-- I get 23. I always know when its time to air up as the mileage goes south. Adding a cetane booster helps sometimes (bad fuel).

6,000 on the clock and I get 30 +/- 2 on 300 mile trips to PA, that is hand calculated and not EVIC (dont have EVIC). Get 20 to 22 around town depending on traffic. Compared to a gaser Liberty that is fantastic and more than makes up for the difference in fuel cost (though at that rate it would take a while to recoup the option cost).

Interestingly, my CRD just crossed 10K miles and suddenly it did an amazing 23.7MPG average on the last tank. Previously, it had been in the 19-21MPG toilet forever and nothing seemed to matter -- I tried cetane boosters, increasing the tire pressure, and various styles of driving with no real change. It will be another few days before I have to fill up again to see if this trend continues.

Also, since the vehicle did that first 23.7MPG tank, the EVIC has been behaving differently. Previously it would rise and fall much quicker ranging from 22 MPG to 26.5MPG. My routine drive to work would easily see the EVIC start at 24.6 and end at 25.7. (Note the real mileage was around 20MPG.) Now, the routine drive sees the EVIC swing from 23.8 to 24.3 -- about half the range it was doing before and the numbers are much closer to the (hopefully) real MPG.

Bizarre.

I've entered everything at the fueleconomy.gov web site, but per the docs it may take some time before my MPG stats are visible to others.

Thanks guys for all of the input. My purpose of starting this thread was to try and get people to register with fueleconomy.gov.
They have an excellent database and tools for recording and tracking fuel economy that everyone can use. I think everyone should give this a look.

By the way has anyone seen a drop in fuel economy when using Power Service? Eveytime I put some in (I know I havent been consistent with it) my fuel economy seems to drop a few MPG. However it could just be random driving conditions.

I used power service in the gray bottle, and I believe I get a boost. The white bottle has anti-jell and I don't know if that will cause a drop in mileage. I bet it does as well as winter fuel.

Power service Will NOT make your mpg drop ..try a different place for diesel fuel.

The first time I went to silver lake, Mi. I got 26 MPG at 75 MPH. The last time I went I drove 65 MPH with a boat in tow that weighted around 600 lbs. with the gray bottle power service additive and only got 21 MPG. I have a hard time believing it was all the boat but maybe the CRD just likes to go fast.

I'm at 11,000 miles and getting 19.5 mpg average... That's about 50/50 street/highway.

I have yet to average below 21 mpg on a tank. On a recent 50/50 hwy/town trip to PA and back, where I averaged 25 mpg for that tank. I just filled up tonight, with more highway and less city ...somewhere around 70/30 and averaged 23.84mpg...but I attribute that to our switching to winter blend here in Maryland. I use BP power blend, and I recently tried a couple of tanks at the Royal Farms station in Baltimore and my mpg did drop by about 1-2mpg...their diesel didn't do well in my Jetta TDI either....so I stick with the BP power blend.

EDIT: I have 5700 miles on the clock

I just passed 4000 miles and with my chip and exhuast I got 24.5mpg on my first tank, I think it will be better once I lighten my foot on the throttle and break the engine in a bit more. Just the exhaust gave me 1-2mpg and the chip another 2mpg, I was getting 21-22 at best on the highway...

I have about 9000miles on the jeep now. In the summer in the city I was getting 21-22mpg. On the highway it gets 29-31mpg and this is through the canadian rockies.

In the winter time now, I've gotten the predator module installed and a set of sticky winter tires. It's snowing enough the last month the Libby has been in full time 4x4 drive. Not sure if they do winter diesel in Canada but that could also be a factor. Right now I am getting 18.5mpg in the city with all the above playing a factor. In 3 weeks I do the same drive through the rockies and it will probably be snowing so 4x4 is a must. I'll report back then with a highway milage.

I am pretty sure they do use winter blended Diesel up there. They would have to or else the fuel would gel when it gets really cold.
