Post subject:  Used CRD Prices

I'm always looking at Liberty and especially CRD stuff on Ebay. Ever since the CRD went out of production, I've noticed that our CRDs seem to be fetching a LOT more money than they did just one year ago. So, out of curiosity, I went to cars.com. I looked for 05-06 CRDs. Here are the results:

32 total vehicles for sale nationwide.
Average price: $21,073.
Average mileage: 16,765.

Highest mileage: 48,602 ($18,921, 05 Sport).
Highest price: $24,999 (346 miles, 06 Limited).

Then I went to Edmunds.com to see how it appraised my 05 Limited which has about every option possible. Here are the results:

Trade-in: $22,517
Private-Party Sale: $24,484
Dealer Retail: $26,410 (more than I paid for it, as I got it during the employee pricing plus, plus, plus...)
Certified Used Vehicle: $27,434

This is DEFINITELY higher than when I checked this past spring. Despite our cars' problems, there must be a pretty strong demand for the few that are out there. An auto-broker friend says that he sees CRDs at auction occasionally, but they're always DC buy-backs being unloaded. They've purchased a few of them for resale, taken them to the best Jeep place in town for all the TSBs, etc., and their customers love them.

Just by contrast, if you went out and bought a loaded, 2006 Commander today, it would be worth about the same for trade-in the minute you drove it off the lot!

I just had mine appraised to trade in and they only want to give me $14,500. Thats a $10,000 loss in a year. I have 20,000 miles on it.

I think I'd either try to sell it myself or get all the online appraisals, go back, and tell them they are full of sh--.

You get screwed ANY TIME you trade a car in to ANY dealership. That's the worst way to sell your car. If you want serious money for it, sell it privately through auto-trader or ebay motors.

That's odd because I just checked mine on kbb.com. I have more miles on mine and I'm getting a higher value (although mine is a limited).

If you're going to get rid of it only after a year, I'd try selling it to a third party. The dealer usually won't get you your best price; it's just more convenient, and your going to pay for that convenience.

Those online sites seem to show a HUGE difference between Limited and Sport versions of the CRD. Try doing yours as a Sport, and I bet you'll be shocked how much it drops. At least here in Colorado, I don't think it matters that much to most buyers. I got a limited mainly because I really preferred its seats to the standard seats. "Is it in good shape?" and "What tires are on it?" seem to be the only questions here if you sell it privately.

I got a Limited because my wife HATED the look of the fender son the Sport, my Limited has less options than many Sports, all it got was the Limited package, no leather seats, no sunroof, no skid plates, no EVIC etc...

God knows how limited my limited was, I read somewhere a while back that the Limited in a CRD was pretty limited anyhow compared to the Sport.

I wanted a limited CRD with side airbags & the tow package but without leather seats. I was living in Oklahoma City at the time and the only one the dealer could find was in Greeley, CO (nearly 1000 miles away). There was also one without leather but without side airbags in Dallas that they tried to sell me. They seemed quite surprised I didn't want leather in a limited. Seems they're rare. Went with a factory order when they refused to absorb the import costs.

I actually said no to the limited because I wanted the cheaper fenders-- they hide the scratches and scuffs better when you are off-roading. Wish I had the nicer interior, however.

My trade in quote...13,800 at one dealer, 13,500 at CarMax...No thanks, I still owe almost 17k on it!

The KBB private party for my 06 Basic limited with 6,100 miles on it is $24,160.

Retail is $28,115

NEVER trade a car in at the dealership. You are getting ripped off that way.

Sell it privately by ebay, cars.com, or autotrader.com. If you have negative equity, save up the difference in selling price. Yes, it takes a little more work, but that work is surely worth 10k in my opinion....ever 1k would be worth it to me.

KBB and Edmunds vary hugely on used CRD values. KBB lowballs big time, Edmunds is much more in line with what people are getting in the real world.

I went in to buy a part on Saturday. There was a guy there wanting a CRD. He was looking at mine when his salesperson told him that mine was a customer's car and not for sale. When I walked out, the guy offered me $22K on the sport for it.

Sell it privately. There are a LOT of people who want these. The dealers are just offering the same $ they'd offer for a 3.7L. A---oles.

Wait till gas hits $3.00 national average, your CRD will come up in value. How many SUV's out there that can tow 5000 lbs or drive as comuter and get 26 to 30 MPG's, none that I have seen.
