It was pretty solid. Temp got down to 14 degrees F. What is the temp at which it will thaw/freeze? :evil:

Short answer: It depends on the feedstock oil. BD made from palm oil can gel at temps as high as 45 or 50°F; BD from soy oil usually gels in the 30-35° range.

Longer answer: Since it was in your garage, I assume you're "brewing" it yourself. If that's the case and you're getting it used from a restaurant, the higher your titration turned out (higher free fatty acid), the higher the gel point. It's my understanding that oil that is used longer in the fryer (headed and cooled more times) will gel at a higher temp than one that is used for fewer frying cycles. I'd have to look that up to verify.

If you can get it back up to 30 or 35°F, you should be okay. Make sure it's warmed up the point that it's no longer cloudy, then I'd mix some dino-diesel with it to lower the gel point (and maybe and anti-gel too). Maybe leaving it outside in the sun for a day will be enough to get it to thaw.

The answer is "it depends." I don't think that FFA content is highly correlated with gel point, but certainly the feed stock and whether it is hydrogenated or not will. Unhydrogenated canola or soy should be pretty good, and should thaw again around freezing. But if you use WVO to make biodiesel, you don't just have veggie oil: there's probably animal tallow in there that freezes at higher temps.

If you want to be safe, run at B50 max when it's cold, leave room in your fuel tank to add (preferably warmed) kerosene or petrodiesel if your B50 samples gel, or keep the rig in a heated garage.

The B-100 was from the 1st of 2 drumms I bought at $1.84 per gallon last summer/fall commercially from a fuel wholesaler in Lansing, OH. I treated it with Power Service silver bottle and I store it in my basement were it stays 65 degrees F. I should not have left the 2 gallon container in the garage. I put it back in the basement and it is thawed. :evil:

Unless you're determined to run straight B100, throw some diesel in there to a 50/50 mix to help lower the gel point.
