There is a multiple of issues starting with the amount of dirt that gets past a K&N. The main problem is this dirt mixes with the oil/sludge within the Charged Air Cooling system and will become lodged in the intercooler. This was the explaination given to me by a DaimlerChrysler produce support rep.
If you don't want to use a paper filter, I suggest trying a True-flow foam filter. Been running one for several months and satisfied with the results.

To make it clear... NO!

However, that only applies to foam-type filters, which were designed for racing applications, not longevity.

Search around here as well as at Bobistheoilguy.com

The "K&N are bad" factoid should be added to the FAQ .

Old Navy,

If this doesn't deserve a FAQ, I don't know what does!
BTW good work on the FAQ's. Keep 'em coming.

P.S. Ken must type faster than I do.

I have been running one for awhile and my check engine light came on a few thousand miles ago, I have been trying to get it into the dealer but have not been able to. Just yesterday I looked at the filter and at the same time sprayed some contact cleaner through the mass air sensor while I was there. It looked like it had an oily film on it before I cleaned it but now it is clean. Today while driving the light went out and stayed out. I think that was causing my check engine light. Time will tell but I think in the mean time I will run a paper filter.

This things were designed to stop "Beer Cans and Chicken Bones" and let everything else through. That is why they are so popular in racing.

I just put one of these in http://www.upscaleauto.com/air_filtration.htm They don't make outrageous claims. K & N will let more air thru but a lot more dirt.

Also putting in the K&N won't change the performance of the CRD one bit, so why spend the bucks?

Dirt and turbo fins don't mix. They will eventually get beat up if you are passing lots of dirt. Not to mention what it does to the cylinder walls.
