Post subject: | CRD Stalling |
Does anyone else have a problem with their CRD stalling? Mine stalls a couple times a month when cold, and only occassionaly in the summer. So far, it has always happened within the first few minutes of driving. It is not a gentle stall where the motor just quits, rather it bucks/surges somewhat violently for a second and comes to a sudden stop. Kind of like letting off the clutch of a manual transmission while in gear at a stop. I have had it in to the dealer a couple of times, and of course it will not do it when they have it, and they said that Chrysler told them that they had never heard of this problem before. I had really high hopes that the F37 "recall" would take care of this. I had the full recall done Friday, including the new pump, but today when I went to pull out of the garage it stalled again. I am at a loss as to what to do next. I would like to know if anyone else is having this problem so that I can at least show them that I am not the only one. |

Have you checked for air in fuel line, water or tried different fuel source ?. -G |

Try putting in some power service anti gel white bottle to clear up fuel |

Mine has jsut started doing this- it only does this at the first or second stop of the day. I thought there was a tsb about fluid collecting in the wrong part of the tranny during the night and then the transmission acting funny in the morning. I haven't taken it to the shop yet. |

Thanks for the tips. I have tried different fuels to no avail. I get the sense that it is not the engine that is the problem, rather something further back in the drivetrain locking up and stopping the engine. |

Is the transmission fluid level correct? These transmissions seem to be rather temperamental about fluid level and do some funny things when even a little low. |

Typical Chrysler transmission. ![]() You got that right. Found out the hard way that my company (Dodge) truck has to have at least 1/2 a quart more than the full mark or it won't shift right. ![]() |

I'll have to check the fluid level. The dealership just did a flush as part of the F37 recall Friday, and has never mentioned it being low when in for service. |

How many miles do you have on it? Is it possible you got some bad fuel that plugged up your fuel filter? |

I have 13k miles on it. It does not seem like a fuel filter issue because it only happens within the first minute or two of starting the vehicle; within the first or second stop as posted by someone else. |

If the dealer can't figure it out....I guess try to plug it in at night for a couple of days. If it starts and runs fine (doesn't stall) when you plug it in, I would say something is causing the engine to quit when it is cold and the timing is advanced. Also, may very well be the glow plugs. I seriously doubt something in the drive line is "locking up" only when the vehicle is cold and the timing is way advanced. |

Post subject: | no its with the tranny |
It has happened to me three times. Two times car was at idle for awhile before I started driving. Also - when stalling commences the jeep pulls hard. Exactly like stalling a car with a manual transmission. It has to be the torque converter not unlocking. It also has only happened when it is below 40 or so degrees. |

Post subject: | a possible solution |
For some history- my t/c and front pump was replaced a month ago. Before this whole f37 mess. Once it got cold my libby started stalling on the first or second stop of the day. Today I checked the tranny fluid- the car was warm- and the dipstick was DRY! No fluid on any part of the dipstick. It took a whole bottle of atf+4 to fill it up. I don't know if it has solved my stalling problem yet- will see in the morning. ps. the bottle of valvoline atf+4 was "specially formulated" for chrysler vehicles. It supposedly has "shudder stopper technology" so we will see about that. |

I think Valvoline must read the different chrysler forums ... "Now with anti-shudder technology !!" |

double checked it - the bottle actually says "shudder protection- for smoother performance" and has a logo to boot lol |

Don't know how to do a picture but here is a link http://idisk.mac.com/huxrules/Public/Photo641.jpg should work. Its valvoline atf+4 bought at advance auto parts in College Station TX. Can't tell you if it actually did anything. Sorry for the poor picture- taken with web cam. |
