If I didnt have the CRD, I would have a ????

In simple terms, there is no replacement for the CRD (as least as far as I am concerned). I bought it because I wanted a daily driver that was off road capable without killing me in fuel costs as I drive 20-22k/yr. There was no other vehicle available that had both the size and reputation for "ruggedness". Yes I could have boght a small SUV by a number of Japanese car companies, but never would have felt "safe" on the trail, nor would I be able to carry all the junk I take with me on trips. So there was no option for me.

If not for the CRD, I would simply have kept my XTERRA and lived with the horrible mpg

I test drove that before the CRD. The ride was just a bit harsh for a DD, but I'm looking in to buying a used one

I really love my CRD and would buy another for a spare if I could afford it.

I would still have my MB 560SL. However, the CRD is a blast in it's own peculuar way...can't describe it but it's is a hoot to drive. Offroad, it almost idles up the steep shale hills we have here.....unbleivable.

I would have to do the following:

- Buy a VW TDI for a daily driver and press my CJ8 into winter service (which I didnt want to do) from time to time.
- Get something I would hate driving like an Impreza AWD wagon
- Go to a JK unlimited which in my opinion is to expensive and thirsty for an everyday metro area street runner. Until they do a diesel in it I would prefer my CRD.

I would own a 98.5+ ram 2500 CTD. then id have something to tow my bronco with. :lol:

but i cant see getting rid of my CRD it fits in the driveway just fine and does what i need it to.

A restored Dodge Ramcharger with a Cummins Turbo Diesel!!!! But since that would be a costly project will have to stick with the CRD.

My 77 318 CI Ramcharger got 15 mpg and todays bigger SUV's aren't much better,

I was serously contemplating dropping a diesel in an Cherokee because importing one from Europe was prohibitively expensive. One would have taken endless time to modify, and the other endless time to pay for.

The CRD was a simple and financable (sp?) alternative.

Well Europe is totally spoiled with diesel options. But i think these third world countries have the right car for me. Basically nissan and toyota both build a diesel half ton crew cab 4x4 pickup that is jacked up from the factory. I think they are sweet. The toyota is called a hilux and i think the nissan is actually a frontier. The American market has nothing else for me.

I'm pretty happy with what I've got right now.

'87 MB 300D Turbo, 35 MPG combined, rides and handles like a dream, goes like stink when you mash the go pedal, simple enough to maintain on my own, great daily driver.

'05 CRD, 25 MPG combined, also goes like stink when you mash the go pedal, great foul weather/utility vehicle (when the EGR and tranny feel like playing).

Both diesel.

Life is good.

Most likely I would have have a Silverado 2500 Crew Cab with the Duramax Diesel or a Ram 2500 Mega Cab with the Cummins and the 6sp manual. Still thinking of getting one of these but I would keep the CRD as my wife really wants it.
