How does the 4x4 shift lever work?

Post subject:  How does the 4x4 shift lever work?
Is that a manual shifter or is it just for looks and save on cost? What I mean is it a knob in aesthetics only? Does it really work just like button on the dash?

I've had the occassion to use mine and don't feel the usual "clunk" of past 4x4's I've had....

It certainly is a functional part of the 4x4 system. It may be smoother than you are used to, but engage it in the snow and you will quickly see that it works as advertised.

It is a real shifter handle that has an actual physical linkage to the transfer case. No electronic/pneumatic actuators on our jeeps. :wink:

It is pretty smooth until you try to get into 4 LO...the manual will instruct you how to engage 4LO properly...otherwise it is simple

It's a cable linkage going to the transfer case.

No doubt...4LO is a pain in the booty to get in to...read the manual, and read in carefully, it is not easy. I did it for the first time a few weeks ago, and have been practicing in my back field every since. You never know when you might need it, and it is not easy to get in to.

Yeeeah. I was practicing this, too. After a while the transmission shift to N, get the diff pulled to 4lo, and reengage the tranny doesn't take two seconds. But it seems to me if the situation ever occurs when I realize 4LO is necessary it is unlikely I'll be in a place where I can roll the vehicle slow to make the switch.

Anyone ever try shutting the vehicle off in gear, then shifting to 4Low? I used to drive an old Ford and this was the only way to get it into Low range.

Mine goes into 4lo easily but you have to be stopped. I go from 2wd to 4wd no problem but 4 lo takes coming to a complete stop, then neutral, then go and i have had no problems. Going back to 2wd is just as easy and sometimes easier.

PS...my 83 CJ7 you would have to kick the thing...many times...to get it OUT of 4wd. Best thing was 2lo when you did not lock the hubs, great for moving trailers on streets.
