Hi all,

I was brave enough to change the transmission fluid and fliters on my CRD last night. I used the new Valvoline ATF+4 fluid with "shudder protection".

First, I can't believe they use RTV instead of a gasket for the transmission pan. It is just a pain in the butt to get that surfact clean and then have to apply RTV back to it and put it back on.

Second, one of my 8mm pan bolts was apparently sheered off at some point (before I did the change) and there was a very very small amount of ATF coming out of that hole. I can still see part of the bolt in there, so what should I do? Should I just stick some RTV up in there and worry about it the next time I change tranny fluid?

Another thought on the RTV is that it is really messy and you don't want to get peices of it down in your trans pan because it can clog your filters. No wonder they have so many problems with these transmissions.

I would try to get the bolt out, even if it sealed up fine without it. It would just bug the heck out of me! :) Did it break off way up in there?

from the looks of it, it looks almost as though the very tip of the bolt broke off and all the threaded portion stayed up in there. It isn't in a bad spot and there is a bolt right next to it, but I just don't want my tranny fluid leaking out. I was thinking I would deal with it on the next tranny service. You can see that there is a very tiny amount of ATF coming out of the hole where the tip of the bolt should be. I didn't want to go overboard with the RTV, because I didn't want any of it finding it's way into my tranny pan. When you look at the pan (while it is off the car) there are crevices in between each of the bolt holes and that is where you put the bead of RTV. That is another downside to using RTV instead of a gasket, too much and that stuff ends up in your tranny pan and clogs up filters.

I think I would try to take the bolt out. Since its broke off, there should be no load on it, you may be able to use a very pointy sharp punch and walk it back out. I know I would not sleep at night with it that way.

They do sell gaskets availble from other than the dealer. I used one instead of RTV, since I hate RTV as much as you.

Any suggestions where?

Try a left handed drill bit. If it doesn't move use the easy out that matches the drill bit. Did you install a drain plug in the pan when it was down?

For now I stuck a little RTV in there. It isn't leaking, and I will use an easy-out when I have some time to fiddle with it again.

Anyone know where to find the gasket mentioned in the previous post? The dealer can't get a gasket for it, and I would much rather use a gasket than RTV.
