My dealer/service writer asked what brand of fuel I was burning in my CRD today after they replaced the boost sensor as well as doing F37 + tranny pump & ECM.....

My reply was BP. He said he had never had one so gunked up

I had him look up when they replaced the last EGR and it was only 8,900 miles.

Now I have to worry about having an EGR to clean or get the dealer to handle this issue?

To add to this crap I can notice less power and the shift is weird leaving 2nd gear to 3rd?

Anyway... what say you folk?

Merry Christmas,

Tom

Oil in the intake tract from either the crankcase vent or turbo seals would be a big factor in the gunk. EGR soot by itself is dry. The dealer is either ignorant or trying to blame you for damage from a design flaw.

Since they replaced the "boost sensor"...was it because it was faulty or somehow gooked up? Sounds like they are giving themselves a way out by blaming bad fuel. Check your air filter to make sure it is clean...seems like oil passing the turbo seals could be the culprit. Also check the top hose of your CAC (intercooler) to see if it has a coat of oil.

Darby,

The air filter was first changed @ 24,000 miles

I am to blame for that ! I change oil & filter at 6,250 on-the-spot but I skipped the air filter. Poor actions on my part but the bad BP fuel is BS I think.

What is funny is that the air filter was not checked the first time I brought the CRD for a CEL. The tech said the Mass Air sensor was bad but I think the air filter was the problem all along.

In troubleshooting any problem we are supposed to look for the most obvious problem. The air filter was not on the techs mind or the computer didn't point him in the right direction.

Thanks.

Tom

I use BP fuel and I think BP fuel is very good fuel (power-blend premium). At least around here....but I should also note that my local BP has been certified for ULSD as well.

I have not found ULSD in the Piedmont area of North-Carolina

I had an iffy experience with BP diesel once, loudness, slight loss of power, ecnonomy etc. A little PS cleared it up though. It could have just been a low volume station or something.

You can get bad fuel from anyone at any time. It all comes through the same pipe anyway. Around here both gas and diesel are shipped through the same pipe. Only fuel that has it's own pipe is amoco ultimate or bp, whatever the hell they call it now.

Or sometimes if their in-ground tanks aren't sealed correctly they can get water in when it rains. Look for high-volume stations as their diesel will most likely be fresh.

I checked my CAC hose and it did have a film of oil on the outside of it prior to the cooler. The discharge hose to the EGR had a coating of black oil on the inside. Is this a sign of the turbo seal going? I have had two EGR's replaced with less than 8,000 miles.

That is not good. OldNavy had to have his CAC replaced along with EGR from the same symptoms. You might want to PM oldnavy for more info

I went through the same BS. I went through 2 egrs, 2 glow plugs, 1 mix valve, 1 cac, 1 ccv.

The last replacement they replaced the CAC, EGR, and MIX valve, after that everything was gtg, no more egr's in about 12k, miles. They tried to blame it on my STP air filter and poor diesel. I basically laughed at them and told that was complete BS. I also mainly used BP.. They didnt have much to say after i told them that. I have a feeling the Newer ccv and mix valve fixed most of my problems. The old CAC was pretty bad, tech tried to clean it but decided it was a futile attempt and got a replacment, of which DC didnt even question. Oh, STAR also advised me to dump some ATF into the tank to clean things up.

What in the world would ATF do for the diesel in your tank, other than maybe turn it red?

It's an old trucker trick to add lubricity, similiar to adding a little biodiesel.

I have seen worse. In the early 90's a couple of bus companies that I know mixed their used motor oil into their fuel as a way to dispose of it. Of course in an old 2-cycle Detroit it doesn't make much difference.

Cummins had an oil system like that awhile back. I heard the feds shut it down because no taxes were being paid on the motor oil. They considered it a fuel.

burning ATF - bad idea

burning used motor oil - really bad idea

If they want you to "clean things up" Dump 16oz of power service Diesel Kleen in there.
