Maybe they should have cleaned their MAP sensor - it might have helped their fuel economy.... but then again, how would they have known?

Is that something you can do yourself? If so, can you tell me how (keeping in mind that I'm only moderately technically inclined)? My mileage has gone up since ULSD came online - and since I broke 10k miles on the ODO. The latter may have more to do with my mileage than anything. My in-town mileage has always been so much less than everyone else's mileage, though my highway mileage is so much higher. Anyway, when I saw your post I thought, "maybe I can give that a try."

Thanks.

Yes, please elaborate on cleaning the MAP sensor. My city/higway mileage (80% city, 20% highway) hasn't been over 19 mpg's in quite a long time.

take off the engine cover.
located sensor on intake side of camshaft housing, towards the back of the engine (under wiring harness).
use the appropriate Allen wrench to remove the one retaining screw (I believe is a 4mm) .
clean the sensor tip with cleaner (MAF sensor cleaner or equivalent)
reinstall.

I used brake cleaner with no ill-effect last time I clean my sensor. it was decently mucked up in 8K (since replacement) without a EHM mod. I hope to report on it's condition in another 8K with a EHM. (EHM = crankcase vent to the underside of truck)

Go to the FAQ for CRD page, there are pictures and instructions for this 15 to 20 minute job.

I have been running the EHM for some time now and mine was clogged with mostly dry powder soot. I think (hope) the only thing that will stop this problem is to switch to ULSD, granted the oil in the intake will make the problem worse by causing it to stick to the sensor quicker and be harder to clean once it is heated enough to harden.

I use ULSD exclusively here in Australia from BP (British Petroleum), and I checked my MAP/Temp sensor last week after 25000kms. It was dirty, but not clogged totally - I could still see through the cage in which the temp sensor is located. Guys using Shell or other brands of diesel here in Australia that aren't ULSD had a lot more clogging of the sensor. My KJ drove the same before and after the cleaning, so it wasn't affected by the small amount of soot.

Hey that is good to hear, it will be nice if it doesn't need cleaning but every 15,000 miles to 30,000 miles.
