I don't think you can remove it without the Check engine light & error codes - which would definitely kill your warranty.

That doesn't stop people from trying - I just haven't seen a good work around yet.

Also - even if you're not doing an annual emissions check disabling emissions controls is a Federal offense. (Which is a significant stretch on an 'Interstate Commerce' definition)

You can't do it on these newer vehicles. It will set off check engine lights andvoid your warranty. The only option I could see would be a custom tune of the ECU that could turn down or turn off the EGR in the ECM. This would keep it from throwing a CEL and should be pretty much undetectable by any dealer staff. Don't count on anyone marketing such a chiptune though, because as the previous poster stated...it is a federal crime to tamper with emissions equipment.

I plan to unplug it, buy a code reader and scan it for codes every month or so since the cel will be on all the time. Can anyone describe a down-side to doing this? I won't do it till i'm out of warranty.

There has to be a way though. I cannot believe somebody hasnt just made a spoofer like so many folks use when they remove their cats on the street cars and need to prevent the light from even occuring. I used one for racing (had a cat on flanges because we did have emissions where I was from originally) and I'd pop my spoofer on for the races and when my cat went back in, so did my real O2 sensor but the EGR has to be just as easy to trick.

Things are not so simple anymore in the car world. Diesel technology is way ahead of gasoline. Just look at all the low voltage systems on the new diesel trucks. All switching is done through the ecm, and I do mean all switching. Headlights, horn, power windows, the list goes on. It's so bad you can't even put extra lights on the truck without programming the ecm to power them. It's overwhelming at times. I think the egr can be bypassed but it will take more than a blocking plate and a couple of fake sensors.

I think it can be that simple. Why not make a small computer device that answers the computer exactly. I mean they make $100 laptops for kids in Africa and those things are whole computers. I'll install that under the hood if I need to. If you take anything inside the actual EGR and duplicate its electronics the computer can be told anything it wants.

First which one of the two computers will you be talking to? $100 laptops in Africa??? We need less computers in the crd,not more. I just can't see adding another computer to the system. Oh yeah just strap it under the hood. That would be great in my environment. I'm not trying to bash but we need to be realistic about this. It will take some considerable time, effort, and money to do this. All of which are at a premium to me right now. I'll just drive mine as is and fix as I go. The inmotion tune job is the best thing out there now imho and that's where I would start.

I reread my post and realize it's a bit negative. This site makes me pessimistic. Sorry. We all have to start somewhere and your idea is more than I have. Go for it.

I didnt take any of it personal. I wasnt actually saying install the laptop under the hood but I was saying that electronics have come a long way. I dont disable mine either. I deal with cleaning gunk and what not. The only time I didnt have my cat installed on my old car was at the track and that was so I could run leaded fuel. I am interested in the tune job, but thats not until I have like some vacation time coming up where we'll be in the wife's car. Of course the board makes you pessimistic - its what they all do :)

I will post on a block off plate and ECM tune that is in R&D, as far as what I did , well I can not post it because of the emission law. Now if you get the Inmotion Chip Tune, it will dial the EGR back 60%, so if you do the tune and do some thing with the CCV , you will be ok.
