Aarrrgh.

I always thought SHELL ULTRA diesel was ULSD, but it ain't so apparently, I see Flying J carries ULSD now, same price as normal diesel.
Anybody has shell ULSD in their area, if so what does the pump say ? sticker wise.

in Texas I've only seen 1 grade of diesel at any given station. no regular no ultra - just diesel. (and no Cetane ratings)
Although the shell stations in Austin have started marking their pumps ' may contain up to 20% biodiesel'

There is ULSD all over Texas...here in San Antonio you can't find anything but it seems.

All the Diesel guys I know here agree that the Shell Diesel seems to run with less power and mileage...don't know why.

Going to Austin in the morning to get some B20 off Slaughter Lane. Mixed in with my half tank of Diesel will give we B10 for a week...

Guys when i went to NY earlier this September I noticed my CRD smoked a considerable amount than it did here in Canada. I assume it is the diesel that we put into her but while I was in NY I only filled up at Sunoco and BP stations. I did enjoy that nice cloud of black smoke when I punched her.

I've been able to correlate my worst mileage with fill-ups at Shell stations near my house.

I always get good mileage on fill-ups at the Sunoco station near my office.

Probably because like in the case of 3 local Amoco/BP stations, they just buy their fuel from cheapest supplier and just truck on like who cares. At the one station I watched the truck leave the Amoco station and then pull in to the Chervron at the other end of the block to drop the rest of his load.

I use shell it is ULSF. I use it because its' the cheapest around. Mobile is 12 cents more per gallon. Right now 2.59 shell. 2.69 to 2.75 mobile. It seems to run ok with shell but better with mobile. Power serviceadded on every fillup.

Didn't know Shell provided bad MPG, I will have to switch back to chevron and run that for awhile.

Only thing I've been able to correlate to local Shell stations is 2 clogged OEM fuel filters and enough junk drained out of my Permacool add-on filter that I ended up trashing one of those as well.

That is why we call them "SHALE Stations"

Wish we had your Valero stations up here. Last two years over Christmas I've made the trip down to your area to visit friends (in Lockhart). Both times, I've stopped at Valero stations along I-30 east of Dallas. Best fuel mileage of any dino I've used bar none. Would like to figure out which refinery they're getting their D2 from.

I feel sorry for you guys over there and your crap fuel. I only fill with BP ultimate Diesel here in the UK but then I do work for BP. On that note your best fuel over there will only be from the Majors so have to disagree with your comments on Shell

I wish what you say were true, but here in the US we do not have the regulation and inforcement of laws/rules for fuel and quality that you and most of Europe enjoy. It is not all that uncommon to have used engine oil dumped into tanks, you should read our regulations governing fuel here in the US. Average cetane for US diesel last year was 42, and 38 cetane was common to some major brands here in the US, if you found 46 cetane fuel it was like finding the Holy Grail. I bought one (1) gallon of diesel couple at a local BP instead of the regular MFA station where I buy 49 cetane fuel and the 1 gal mixed with the 1.5 (approx) gallons I had in the tank and the CRD started smoking like crazy and the engine got noisey has all heck. My guess it was 38/40 cetane as rough as the CRD run on it the other couple times I had to put some into the tank.

Went to the UK to visit my sister and was amused by seeing a choice of grades of diesel fuel (along with CNG) at the local filling station. Wasn't so amused by the $7.50/gal when I figured the exchange rate.

Scottie.
Here in Central Ohio USA BP does not have a reputation for pumping good fuel, gas or diesel  Some stations years ago had Diesel Supreme but that dissappeared. Unfortunatly some of the signs on the pumps and highter prices remained for a while. Shell stations do not handle diesel around here. Also stations seem to be able to get whatever mix of gasoline/alcohol they want even though the legal limit is 10% The state of Ohio does not police fuel quality only quanity. If you buy a gallon you get a gallon. The question is a gallon of what :?: The best fuel I've found comes from a chain department store. There is a B20 station 25 miles away but they are very small unmanned truck fueling station. Truck stops on interstate highways have the cleanest fuel as a rule due to their volume  When VW toured the US with their 3 cylinder Lupo's they flew fuel bought at a Shell station for them. The support cars, diesel Eurovans, used whatever we had. Somewhere in Texas they got bad fuel and made a unscheduled stop at a local VW dealer

If I remember correctly they had the problems after crossing into US from Mexico and the first fill up in Texas was the killer. They ended up going back into Mexico to get the higher cetane and cleaner fuel from Calixo (?) until they could get some flown in from Europe, it was a real eye opener for VW and the fuel quality here in the US. There was quite a write up about it on Fred's TDI forum.

My wife usually fuels up her Chevy Uplander VAN at the Exxon or Shell around here as they usually have the cheapest fuel. BP is more expensive both here in Laurel and up in Baltimore from my experience. I fuel my CRD at BP stations (Laurel BP and Jessup BP...both of RT 1). They are both labeled for ULSD and both are Power-Blend premium Diesel. Of course, they are more expensive at $2.89, but my CRD and my Jetta TDI (before it was wrecked) both ran significantly better on the BP fuel from these stations. The other options around here like Citgo and Exxon (Esso) are slightly cheaper but IMO their fuels aren't as good. My TDI would emit a cloud of smoke on cold start when running on the Esso, Royal Farms, and Xtra fuels diesel product...but no smoke at all when running on BP. I also noticed smoother, slightly quieter operation, and more pep when running on BP. Of course, smoke on the CRD is minimized running on the BP but it will still smoke a little if I floor it.

None of the Shell or Sunoco stations around here carry Diesel from what I have seen. On the eastern shore of Maryland, they have Sunoco, Shell, and Valero with Diesel. The only one I have used on a trip down there was the Sunoco and my CRD seemed to run very well on that as well.

I don't think brand of diesel is quite as important as how much diesel a particular station moves. IMO a higher volume station is always better. Anotehr thing about the BP stations around here is that I always see a lot of big trucks there filling up their huge tanks, so I know they move quite a bit of fuel.

Interesting. I've used Citgo, BP B20, BP D2, Texaco and Shell LSD and ULSD. The brand doesn't seem to matter - the best running ULSD is the first ULSD in Charlotte I found and its a Shell station. Runs almost as good as B20, very quiet, no smoke and the least expensive place in town. It has a lot gasolene pumps, but only 4 diesel pumps, but they're busy every time I fill up there, usually with large diesel delivery trucks buying 50 gallons at a time. This is by far the best D2 I've ever bought. I can buy Shell (labeled LSD) across town and its average at best and a different color - amber instead of translucent green. Same brand store/fuel station, but totally different fuel characteristics. Price ranges from $2.53 to $2.70 for Shell D2 ULSD within 6 miles of each other. I also noticed that the BP in NC is nothing like the BP in Illinois - that was extremely good D2 when I was passing through a couple of years ago.
