Aren’t the overseas model CRDs available with the 6 speed? If so seems like it would be fairly easy to do the swap. I'm really concerned about the long term reliability of the auto tranny I have (I seem to have the dreaded shudder) and DC wants an arm and a leg for an extended warranty. Any thoughts on this would be great :-)

Yes, overseas models are available with the 6 speed. You'd better have some deep pockets if your looking at swapping for a manual. It's not as easy as unbolt the auto and pop in the manual. There are software considerations for the ECU. Additionally the overseas models have a 2.5L mated to a manual transmission. I think and would need some of our overseas posters to verify that DCX recently they introduced the 2.8L.
I would give my left wing nut for a manual, but it would by far outweigh the costs of the extended warranty.
Another dumb move by DCX for not having the CRD with the manual option in the US.

They do have the 6-speed 2.8L CRD match up...you would need to replace the tranny of course, ECU and TCM with Euro Spec/maybe Canadian Spec ECU and TCM. It would really be cheaper to get a good TC built and Shift Kit to fix the problem. We just have to find someone to be the test dummy ... or ... test guru depending how you look at it.

I found a web site www.newmoparparts.com that lists parts for the 2005-2006 CRD's. It has a listing for manual transmission, clutch, ECM, etc for the 2.8L and prices....Worth a look...

The tranny may be getting a bum rap. The poblems have been with the TC not the tranny which I hear is a very solid unit. There have been some pump problems but I was never clear on the cause and it may have been TC debris floating around.

Canadian spec ECU? Thought all NA vehicles had the same ECU...

All NAFTA vehicles are available only as ATX (USA, Canada, etc). All '05-'07 CRD KJs use the same type of ECU, just different SW flash for vehicle configuration.

BUX (export vehicles) were indeed available as MTX with the 2.8L engine. Transmission is the NVG370 if memory serves correct. However, BUX-level engines feature some different components (some vehicles had pneumatic EGR valves, different design) and so the export MTX SW on a NAFTA car will result in numerous CELs.

No need for TCM on the MTX - one less module to have no work properly.

You find someone to build us a decent TC and other gear, I'll be the test dummy/guru.

Warranty be d####d, what good is the bloody warranty if we only keep getting band-aid fixes every few months and constant visits to the dealer?

My vehicle, my money, the beast is going to get fixed to MY satisfaction where it holds together, or it's getting traded.

Bring it on.

I sent www.newmoparparts.com a message about a part list. If I get a response I will post it.

What about the Transguard Shift Kit. Didn't someone put one of those in? How did it work out?

I'm with Mitch. Just like any DC Diesel, the TC is junk and it's an easy fix once we have a supplier.

so I did get a response...they said to trade it in for a manual  . In my polite typing voice I told them that is a great idea, only they don't sell the CRD with a manual in the US. for people that sell Mopar parts they know nothing about their product.

anyway, once again if I do get a parts list I will post it.

Thanks for all the inputs on this thread its actually been very helpful as now I understand there’s nothing inherently wrong with the CRDs 545RFE tranny it just needs some upgrades (TC and transgo kit) which is a whole lot simpler then a swap and I actually prefer the auto off road (and on lol), but I was looking around newmoparparts.com (holy cow that’s a cool site!) and I was floored at how much the front CVs are on this thing!?! $1,016 for the left and $896 for the right? Please tell me I'm stupid and that I'm reading it wrong.

Does anyone know what problem with the automatic transmission does the trans-go kit fix, and how?
