I've been doing oil changes between 3k and 4k miles. But what about everything else? Anyone replace stuff more often then the book suggest?

What is your mileage and what type of driving?

I think if you did a oil analysis it would show that all you are buying with your frequent oil changes is piece of mind.

I do a lot of short drives and with some long ones. I do know that I am buying peace of mind but oil changes are cheap. I have 7,000 miles on it now.

You have a long time before doing anything scheduled other than oil changes. Take a close look at the criteria for schedule A vs B in your owners manual. I made a personal choice because of the seasional temperature extremes in Ohio to follow the more intensive maintenance schedule. If you choose the same, look to change differential & transfer case fluids @ 12.5K miles. Like you already said, oil changes are cheap (as long as you stay out of the dealer). I would be concerned about the soot-load in the oil, another reason I choose the 6250 mile schedule. I suppose I could take the time to pull an oil sample for analysis to see how long I could stretch the oci's but for the money spent I can just change the oil. One thing you can start watching is the air filter.

But isn't the reality, change the software and check the oil?

You forgot to change the EGR valve, and TC.

LOL....good one. Don't forget the tranny pump too..that is part of the TC service

I do 6k oil changes. I use the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40. If you use a quality oil, you should have no problem going 6k between changes. 4k is a little extreme unless you are chipped or using cheap oil.

BTW...what oil are you using?
