Post subject:  Engine Oil
What to use for my UK 2.8 CRD.

Can anyone help with European oil as per my handbook.

Looking to purchase some oil to keep just in case the car needs a top up.

Tried searching Castrol but they didn't have the 2.8 listed.

Is the oil semi- synthetic or fully synthetic or not synthetic

The US books call for 0W40 full-synthetic, or alternate 5W40 synthetic. When I was in London, thought I saw Castrol European Turbo-diesel formula was a 10W40???

I wouldn't trust a 5W30 in this engine. You might try Castrol's website. My sister who works for BP referred me there when I first bought my CRD. Unfortunately this didn't do me any good because BP doesn't sell their European turbo-diesel formula in the US.

Why? The Amsoil agents here in Oz recommended either the 5W40 Euro formula or the 5W30 heavy duty oil.

This is actually a question that I was going to ask. I previously owned a VW TDI that called for 505.01 VW spec oil which is a 5w40. Also acceptable was a 506.01 VW Certified oil which is a 0w30 and good for extending the OCI. My question is this, if it is good enough for the PD TDI engine, why couldn't we use a ow30 diesel rated oil in our CRDs. It should yield an increase in fuel economy. If it is good enough for the PD with it's cam-driven IP, then it should certainly be fine in our CRDs.

In South Africa the service agents are using SHELL HELIX ULTRA 5W/30 Synthetic oil . They buy in bulk barrels . Think I can find it anywhere , No Chance !

I'm wondering about XD-3 0w-30 for winter use and 0w-40 for summer... Very high quality oils. I should also check to see what GC's diesel specification is. Lord knows I have enough of it.

I have noticed that amsoil stuff before. It looks pretty good too. Would be nice if someone was willing to try it out and get some UOA done a few times.

Amsoil makes excellent oils. The HDD thirty-weight interests me somewhat. I am not fond of their marketing structure (like a lot of people) but their product is great.

The service manual I have on cd calls for 10-40 in "export" vehicles that meets Chrysler MS6395. Or ACEA B3, B4 Euro 10-40. Also below -15C 5-40 is recommended.

Where is MrMopar64 when you need him? If these 30 weight HDD oils are just as capable, then why shouldn't we be running them other than warranty compliance? Common sense says that you will get a little better fuel economy because the engine doesn't have to work as hard to pump the lower weight oil. Remember that even if we don't use the 0w40 that chrysler recommends, they would have to prove that engine damage was caused by the oil in order to deny warranty service. Is there anyone who is willing to give these oils a test run and get 2 or 3 UOAs done to see how the 30 weight Diesel oils hold up?

I don't think amsoil recommends the 30w oil for the crd. 5w40 euro oil is what they recommend. Amsoil guy correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry for disappearing, been working in the lab on fabricating some parts and flogging on a dyno.

As for oils, Mobil1 5w40 was always used at work. 0w40 was used if doing extensive testing in the cold. So, 0w40 during the winter in a very cold climate (or if your cranking speeds/start times are bad), 5w40 rest of the time. I think that any good synthetic oil that is of the correct specification will suffice given the proper oil change interval.

Well, after reading this topic, and speaking with an AMSOIL tech, I have decided to go with AMSOIL's European Car Formula Synthetic 5W-40 Motor oil. I purchased a case, and a couple AMSOIL oil filters (part# EAO34). It sounds like this is the best grade to go with. I use AMSOIL in my other vehicle and I love it. I think they have a great product. I am also going to look into getting a FilterMAG for the oil filter. I use one on my other vehicle, and I can only imagine it does the trick for skimming any metal particles potentially in the oil. I'll post back if I encouter any "problems" with the products.

You need to forget the filter magnet and get one of the super magnets and epoxy to outside of oil pan. They are not too expensive if I remember correctly. Give Google a try. Or you could get one of the adaptor plugs form Lubracation Specialest then order a magnatic plug from him or Magnetic Drain Plug. Com

Actually they do recommend the Series 3000 (30w). The new Euro oil is the second choice for Amsoil (it is a little less expensive tho). The 30W will protect great and return a slight mpg increase. It also has excellent "soot control". It is also great for gas engines too.

I checked the Amsoil site the other day. They no longer recommend Amsoil's 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil for our CRD's. Currently, the 5W-40 European formula is the only one on the list.

I checked out Magneticdrainplug.com, but I think I am going to run the FUMOTO valve. Maybe the super magnet is the best alternative. I just wanted to collect the metal particles in a place where they can be removed easily. Thank you for the tip. :wink: Is there any reason you don't like the FilterMAG's?
