Does anyone know what the trailer tongue weight limits are for for the factory tow hitch when using a weight distributing hitch?

Its 10% of the trailer weight. So a 3500lb tow rating can have a 350lb tongue weight and a 5000lb would be 500lb. I think that is standered with any vehicle.

Sorry, that's incorrect. Hitch ratings are dictated by the hitch manufacteror and the vehicle that's it is installed on. In the case of the Liberty it's rated for a max 5,000 lb trailer and a max 500 lb tonque wt. This is a class II hitch. If someone puts a class I hitch on the car then it's rated for the max of the hitch. Conversly if one intstalls a Class III hich (like the GC has) the hitch may be rated for 7500 lbs but the car is still only good for 5,000 lbs.

In reality, towing with 10% of the trailer wt as tonque wt is not very pleasant and should be closer to 13-14%. However, you're still limited to 500 lbs which means you need a lighter trailer.

Sorry, the Liberty is only rated to 5,000lb/500lb. Don't pay any attention to what the hitch rating unless it's rated for less then the vehicle.

You're right, it is a class III but it's rated at 5,000. My error, I was thinking of the class VI on the GC. There the reciever is rated for 10,000 lbs but the vehicles max is 7500.

Look at the chart on the next page or so where it give the vehicle tow rating by option pkg. 500 lbs max tonque wt.

The towing rating for the auto transmission Liberty (Cherokee) CRD in Europe (UK) is 3360kg for a braked trailer (that's 7,400+ lbs.) Do they have the same tranny/torque converter? If they tow that much there, it must be possible.

I heard this huge difference between the US and European tow rating might also be due to European laws that severely limit speed when towing.

Trailer I'm looking at buying (Coachmen Blast 150) has a tongue weight of 550 lbs, but the trailer weighs 3400 lbs. It has a max GVWR of 7000 #. I only plan on putting in a 740# ATV and some gear bringing the total towing weight to about 4600-4800#, and using a weight distributing hitch.

That's correct. I took the question to be for US towing.

There is also a max frontal area for trailers listed.

My feeling, your going to be really pushing the limits. You need to keep the tongue wt below 500 lbs and the sway potential is real high. There are a lot of factors that go into towing a trailer besides the trailer wt. For example, if you have more then 2 people and a tank of fuel in the vehicle, you have may exceed the GVW of the Libby.....I think that is about 10,000 lbs or so. This is the max wt of both the TV and the trailer inlcuding everthing from boots to thongs.

Lot's of SWB SUV's end up shiney side down because they ignote the limitations.

as soon as you put the atv on your tongue weight will decrease, you should be fine with sway and weight distributing hitch. If you go over 60 you'll be asking for trouble. And max tongue is 750 from everything i have read including the manual.

The Jeep Liberty is unique in the world of midsize SUV’s in it’s rated capacity to pull a heavy load. Its 5,000 pound tow rating (when properly equipped) is well within the weight of most family runabouts and ski boats. And the Liberty’s maximum tongue weight of 750 pounds is better than most.

The one thing I do miss about my 2000 F-250 Super Duty is towing. That 7.3 PSD with the 6 speed manual would pull just about anything and do it with authority. The only trouble with it was that I could get stuck in a 1/4" of mud or snow. The 2 wheel drive is great for highway towing, but don't go of the beaten path. Tried 3 different typs of tires, weight in the bed, nothing worked. With the issues with the Liberty (of which I've had few as of yet), I should have kept the truck and bought a Hundyai? Elantra and used our Avalanche to tow with when camping.
