For those of you who are depressed enough about the Jeep to commit seppuku (hari kiri) here is another little gem I found on another web site:

Warranty Direct, an independent automotive warranty specialist company, released the results of a survey they recently conducted regarding the reliability of major automotive brands for vehicles 3-to-9 years old. They are ranked by the percentage of mechanical failures reported covered by each brand warranty policy.

Jeep was absolute last in the list with 46.35% of vehicles needing at least one repair under the warranty policy. Ouch. The Jeep Liberty with the exception of the problems we have had with the CRD is the highest quality vehicle Chrysler produces. The Grand Cherokee's have more issues over all than Liberty's. My 2002 was never in for warranty repairs and the 2005 Liberty CRD , well what I can I say. Other than EGR / transmission issues has been flawless . We would buy another Liberty (gas next time) without hestiation.

DarbyWalters “My dilema is that I like what "JEEP" stands for... My 88 year old dad says JEEP stands for “Just Empty Every Pocket”. My dilemma is that we are now retired, my wife loves to drive the CRD and as far as towing my Casita Travel Trailer it works like a dream WHEN IT IS NOT IN THE SHOP. I went a looked at the new FJ landcruser the other day when the CRD had it umpteen codes. Neat vehicle but 13-15 mpg towing and $31,000. The CRD is right at 41,000 miles all but maybe 10,000 towing 3,000# never less then 18mpg at 65 mph. I will dump it when I can find an equivalent diesel vehicle. That has a turning radius of 35.9 feet. My Son in Law’s F-250 PowerStoke, one of the possibilities, got eliminated when it was reviewed that it has a 53 foot turning radius. Imagine being in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona with a 53 foot turning radius.

Since the start of the year, I have had my Jeep 1 week. Rest of the time its been in the shop. Enough said. Far as I am concerned Chrysler, Ford and GMC have hit rock bottom and they no longer have a clue how to build a decent vehicle. These companies were hijacked by greedy bean counters that care only about their bonuses. I am afraid American car companies are in for a long hard road.

At present the best Chrysler has is the LX cars with V6 engines, 300C, Magnum and Charger. The SE and SXT models without excessive electronic do-dads or sunroof are only showing up at dealers for regular service. When I checked with service manager at local dealer the comments were if you bought the SE cars they never saw them for anything as yet except oil & filter changes. The AWD V6 cars are also doing extreemly well, with almost no reports of any problems requiring warranty repairs by the members on the big Chrysler LX forum and may actually score higher on customer approval surveys then 2wd models.

Jeep quality has always been low even or 87 Jeep Cherokee was listed as poor quality with high service rate by CR magazine and it is still running afer 20 years and 300k miles and only normal wear & tear items replaced in that time period.

I have been fortunate not to have all of the problems that many other CRD owners have confronted. As I have said before, I purchased the CRD because it was the most fuel-efficient 4WD vehicle available in the U.S. that is truly off-road capable (though I believe its stock ground clearance to be inadequate).

What's sad is the that vehicle buyers in the U.S. don't have access to the many great diesel-powered 4WD's available in the rest of the world, thanks to our asanine diesel emission standards. Why the U.S. could not adopt the seemingly successful European diesel emission standards I will never know. It's a bureaucratic blunder that deprives Americans of vehicle choices that would actually save fuel.

One only has to check out the manufacturers' foreign websites to see that there are some great choices out there. Personally, I would seriously consider a diesel offering from Toyota or Nissan (a diesel 4WD Hi-Lux pickup from Toyota, for example) if they were available in the U.S. Worldwide, outside of the U.S., I would suspect the percentage of diesel-powered 4WD's approaches 80%. Outside of the U.S., of course, fuel economy actually matters.

For me, the CRD has been pretty reliable and very fuel efficient for what it is--but it's no Toyota in quality. Could I have bought a compact Toyota diesel pickup, I never would have bought the CRD.

I am with you Railguy, if there was a QUALITY small diesel pickup I and many others would buy them in a heartbeat!
