Post subject:  Watch your EHM
Hi all. Well I finally turned chicken last weekend when it was around 13*F. here, went for a 20 mile drive and when I got back in the garage, looked at the ehm where it dumps out and it was at least 1/2 way frozen shut. So I proceded to return it back to stock which I hated to do since my CAC hoses are BONE DRY!!! Well I guess it's better than trying to explain to the service writer why all the seals blew out of the engine..haha. I will be putting the EHM back on in a month or so when it gets out of the single digits for a high and below 0* for lows. Just thought I would let everyone know so you can watch your EHM for freeze-ups. Stay warm!!!! :):)

That's where mine is now, along the passenger side of the radiator. It must catch enough cold air from below to freeze the moist air coming out of the EHM. Maybe if I could make the last two feet of the EHM out of hard copper and wrap it with some sort of 12v heat tape?? But maybe the copper would hold enough heat to melt the ice too......who knows?? Or better yet use soft copper and run it parallel to the down pipe of the exhaust.

How can I check my CAC hose for oil? Where is it. Is there a big thread that explains all about the EHM mod and how to check your hoses?

I have no problems with my EHM in - 40 + weather. The trick is not to have the hose hanging in the elements. I tucked my up against the transmission and it keeps warmer that way. There are lots of posts on this subject and I just slit the end of the hose up about 3 " to let any excess pressure escape in case of freeze up. So far no problems and do not expect any.

Sounds like you use your head for something besides a hatrack. :wink:

Mine is above the frame rail out of air flow and only about 6" from the EGR, but I have plenty of holes in the Coke bottle and a slit in the hose up next to the engine and mine didn't freeze up the other day at 12* F while I was out getting daughter at work.

I also planned for this --call it VW experience. I obtained and modified hard black plastic shields for an 02-04
Liberty and have the 7 pane radiator shut down, with small air around each of the 7 panes. Hose the other day
at -15 100 mile trip, still water dripping, and then into the garage and the heat from the engine continues to
warm any moisture. Posted on another thread for winter shields. You can't hardly tell either.

I have thought about buying the inserts for the CRD, but we rarely have below 20* here. I would guess less then 10/15 days a year below 20*F, and maybe 4 or 5 days in single digets.
