Several times in the last few months when I have accellerated a little harder than normal (but not every time), I have gotten a metallic sounding chatter or chirp that seems to be coming from the right front under the hood for just a few seconds. The sound reminded me of something from my distant past from either a slipping manual clutch or a loose motor mount. Does this ring a bell for anyone? The dealer mechanic is thinking that it could be a TC problem or a common Liberty rear brake problem. Thanks in advance. |

Thanks in advance. Not sure if we are hearing the same thing but I hear a different harmonic following the F37 work. Roughly middle throttle response and pulling under load get a distinctive rattle/howl resonance from the turbo area then dissapates as fast as it started. A co-worker told me he could hear me coming a block away as I decelerate approaching a stop sign and accelerate around the corner, commented that it sounded like a giant vaccuum cleaner. |

Probably not related... but mine makes an odd noise in reverse. It makes a whining noise like a brake is stuck or something for just a second or two when starting to move in reverse. Anybody notice that on their CRD? |

I had this metallic rattle from the turbo area from day one on mine. Ford PSD owners call it turbo bark, when it's related to the turbo. From what I was able to research, its cause on a VGT is when the turbo air pressure is suddenly pushed back into the turbo, due to deceleration of the engine and a slight overboost condition briefly exists. I still don't fully understand the explanation and if this is related to turbo surge/stall or not. MrMopar64 posted something on this a while back. Mine was so loud that it sounded like the turbo was grinding, but it was always after a full throttle, then letting back a little on the throttle. It introduced so much energy that it would cause the wiring loom on the top of the engine to rattle even louder on those metal clips. I installed some metric nuts on the wiring loom points and that stopped the extra noise, but not the turbo rattle. It disappeared completely when they flashed my PCM and detuned it last summer. |

I used to have the exact same thing. Went away after I got my new TC. |

I have the "turbo bark" when you let off the throttle quickly after hard acceleration, but more disturbing is a whirring/chirping sound coming from the engine or tranny when accelerating at 1/2 or more throttle, between 2200 and 2400 rpm. It will go on as long as I hold the rpm there and go away completely on either side of that rpm band. Can't say for sure what it is, but I try to avoid holding the engine speed there for long. |

Have you done the F37 yet? If so, did this tranny condition exist before that? |

I get this chirp or squeek for a fraction of a second during upshift with medium to hard accelleration. It is kind of a metallic sound a bit like the sound you hear when the ESP kicks in. I thought it might be that the transmission bands momentarily have slippage . Not enough hydraulic pressure to produce crisp shifts? Pump almost shot? I haven't gotten the F37 done. |

I haven't gotten the F37 done. This is the one I am hearing. I haven't done the F37 yet. The turbo is on the right side of the engine correct? I know it is tough to tell where sound is coming from but on the CRD but I would peg this as being on the right side of the motor. |

Thanks in advance. My CRD makes exactly the same sound that you describe. It only occurs under certain conditions like you describe and it is easier to produce in the summer than in winter. It's been doing it since just after new (over 30k miles) so I think if there were something wrong with the turbo it would have failed by now. I had a loose engine mount and the sound related to that is totally different. I think that somehow boost pressure is clipping off lower frequency normal engine noise and enhansing the higher frequency sound. Maybe it's harmonic resonance sort of. Unless it gets louder I'm not going to worry about it since the noise has not changed since it first appeared. |

Has anyone tested it in park to see if the sound is there at the same rpm? If it only does it while in gear, I would think that to be a sign of it being drivetrain related. I get the sound when starting to move in reverse, but only after I have had the parking brake set (which I normally only set when on a hill). I suspect it is related to the parking brake releasing. |

Yes. I had it. They put on new rear pads and rotors and that stopped it. That was 14000 miles ago. Also, for the rest of you, DCX has asked the techs to do a check before performing the F37 to see if there is a chatter which may be TC related. Supposedly if they hear it, then a new tranny pump is needed along with the TC. |

Yea, I realize that, but I just thought I would bring it up again since the symptons were the same. Thought he might not have been following the thread or this forum like I have. |

This is exactly as I have described in other posts but mine occurs between 2000-2500, then the vehicle moves slightly more freely. I really theought it was the turbo but today the dealer replaced the turbo assy. Result...It's the same as it was, no difference, the dealer has acknowledged there's a problem but now has given up and can't fix it. They have seen this with 2 other CRD's but not to the extent of mine. They said I should contact DC direct if I want more results? That's it, they gave me the keys and I left, only to drive 50 feet, turn around and head right back to the dealer to point out that the parts changer miss aligned the exhaust pipe to the turbo and there's a new low growl with huge whooshing sound! The tech writer comes out to look and say's "ya I can smell exhaust"...DOH. He goes on to tell me come back tomorrow and we can fix it up. That noise has progressivly been getting worse over the months, to the point where it does it all the time and getting louder under any load but being loudest going up steep grades at 60 KPH. I firmly believed it was the turbo, but not so sure anymore as it was changed. It could be the TC but I doubt it, that blasted noise is right where the turbo lives.....I'll try and talk with the manager tomorrow about options. |

The guy down the street with an '05 has this. I/we can't figure it. Sometimes it does it, sometimes not, but alway under a half load with half throttle. He said it doesn't do it first thing in th AM when cold. It has to warm up first. |
