Tranny Dip Stick

My tranny dip stick literally backs out about 4 inches after 500 miles or so. I stick it back down, it backs out again. Has anyone else seen this?

Yes, and how I cured mine was I push it down and then pull the soft under back edge of the engine cover and rest it on the dipstick to hold it down. Problem cured, I think after a little over a year it might not need the back edge of the cover to hold it in anymore.

The above is the ONSB (Old Navy Service Bulliten), and probably better than a TSB.

All kidding aside I have wondered if the tranny dipstick is about 4 to 6 inches too long. I wish I had thought to check the last time the tranny pan was off.

It is too long. If you really pay attention you can feel the tip of the dipstick hit the bottom of the transmission pan before the handle is seated.

Well I had noticed that myself and even asked a mechanic about that and he didn't know what to say other then that it would not hurt anything other then by pushing up the top of the dipstick which would allow moisture to enter the tranny.

I did think about cutting off about 3" to see if that would cure the problem, but the engine cover has worked fine for a year. However I have seen some deteriation of the backside of engine cover and have been thinking about the cutting off option last few months when I raise the hood and see the dipstick.

Mine just started doing this too.
The temps just started dropping around here about 2 weeks ago,
so I thought the backing out might be from diesel engine rough idle
at start up in cold weather.
Vehicle is 8 months old.
Still, it shouldn't back out.
Anyone ever have this happen in warm weather temps?

Only if you were not properly checking the fluid to start with, ie, not removing the dipstick and wipping it off then reinserting it and removing it again to do the check.

I was thinking that maybe the end of the dipstick was curving down inside the pan when you reinserted it. That would make it read a lot higher than what it actually is.

Not necessarly if the bending wasn't that high up on the stick and I doubt that it is that high. Notice how high up the stick the high/low marks are for a hot tranny. But I guess it could be possible after all man has walked on the moon, so anything is possible.
