My oil pan plug is about stripped. I thought I read several months ago that Jeep had problems with the threads stripping. What is the fix?
Thanks

Several have just tapped the pan to the next larger size SAE (believe they use 5/8"). The pan is cast aluminum which can be tricky to tap. If you attempt this, take your time and make sure the cuttings don't foul the new threads.

That is a risky operation and if you screw up it gets expensive.

Most on here modified theirs with the FUMOTO Oil Drain Valve & adaptor from Greg at Lubrication Specialist. The down side is you really need the stock tranny skid to protect it as it hangs down about 1 1/2", but you really need it to protect the oil filter also.

Have you read the CRD FAQ page? It might save you a lot of problems later on.

I ordered tranny and transfer case skids for the Jeep and they haven't come in yet. I was wondering if this tranny skid will make it more difficult to access the drain plug? I have thought about the valve with a nipple for a hose. I don't have thread issues yet, but if the skid blocks off the area, I may go with the valve. Help me sir.

I put the valve on with the nipple, but I cut it off when it extended below the skid plate (factory) works fine without the nipple, pleanty of room.

Thanks. So the nipple one is too long? Having not seen the skid yet, is there a big hole in it to allow the oil to drain through to the catch pan?

Post subject:  Yes

Yes there is a hole for the oil to drain, and the filter is very easy to get to as well.

It must very from skid to skid some as my FUMOTO does not hang out below the skid, it is about even with the top of the skid. The nipple will only be a problem if you are a rock crawler or some other severe off roader. Just normal back woods to the camp or hunting sight it will be fine with the nipple and the nipple will allow t attach a hose to drain to bottles or even take an oil sample.

I ordered the Mopar ones so I guess I will wait and see when it gets here. It is rocky at times where we go wheeling out here. Not sure if I want anything hanging down to get knocked off.

Then you need the one without the nipple and you save a couple of bucks.

I stripped mine too. I drilled and tapped to next metric size M18 x 1.5. Fumoto has one that size, so you don't need the adapter.

Since the pan is aluminum, is the plug itself ferrous? i.e. I'm getting to my first self-performed oil change and want to put a magnetic collection in place before I drain things. Can I just put a nice heavy magnet against the plug and leave it there while I run the motor for a while before I do the change?

<edit>
Am I being stupid? Are the cylinders even iron/steel?..... been reading too much about lister slow speed diesels I guess.

The entire nipple for my fumoto (with adapter) hangs below my skid plate. Rather than cut it off, I took a hacksaw and scored it around the base of the nipple, halfway through the wall thickness, so if it was struck by road/offroad debris it would snap off with less force exerted on the valve and pan.

One thing to remember is that oil pan is about a inch thick and the nipple would be gone before it ever came close to causing a strain on the pan. That said scoring the nipple is reminiesent of the old saying about an ounce of prevention being worth more that a pound of cure. :wink:
