Post subject:  A few words about the CRD
I like to start of with the bad:
bought an '06 CRD 4x4 for my woman in July 2006.....since then we had it in for:
rear right drive seal leaking onto brakes - repaired under warranty
balljoint recall - repaired under warranty
torque converter recall -repaired under warranty
dealer left out sensor plug, CRD would not shift past second gear -repaired under warranty
after that the shifter would shift between 2 and R, new shift cable -repaired under warranty

The good:

I love driving that little thingy (I usualy drive a 350 HP Dodge diesel w/ race suspension). The Libby will outperform my full size baja truck in off roading when lockers would be needed. Love that electronic brake assist to transfer wheelspin to the wheel needed.
What I am saying is, the Libby does super in soft sand (need to turn ESP off!) good in mud, despites the stock tires and off camber!
We are getting around 30 mpg lugging around.
It's funny to get diesel and people next isle, warn that we are getting diesel, not reg gas...haha.
Its quiet for a diesel, fast in takeoff, I would smoke tires if it would not be for the ESP to keep me from spinning out.

I hope we will not see more problems and that little 4x4 will do just fine for my woman and myself if I wanna play.....lol.

ps.

The only way I got the Libby stuck on the beach was in 2 Hi and ESP off and tons of wheelspin, but when put into Fulltime and ESP back on, even with stock tires and normal 32 psi pressure, the CRD pulled back out.

Amazing how some CRD's differ in power. I have repeatedly heard people say that their CRD has so much power that it spins the tires on dry pavement at takeoff. Mine isnt like that, mine wont even spin the tires with the programmer on the highest setting. Weird

The absolute best thing about this vehicle are the looks and comments when filling up at the diesel pump... especially when they shut the pump off! :lol:

Mine doesn't have that tire shredding power either. Never has. Unless I powerbrake it.....

yes indeed the CRD is a great motor However TBH it ain't a quiet engine not in todays world if you were over hear in Europe and heard the V6 diesel of say BMW VW Merc Mitis you would soon realise how the CRD engine sounds like a bag of bolts. Obviously I don't mind though as I own one. :wink:

I honestly think I will miss that sound if I ever get a newer diesel.

The ESP is awesome in the snow. Even in Full time 4wd it will spin all 4 tires simultaneously with ESP in partially off mode. Part time 4wd makes it even easier. Mine will spin all 4 on a wet road as well.

You don't think so? I do...

Ever driven / heard a Ford Powersuck? OK, so it has a V8. Subtract half the sound and it's still nowhere near as quiet.

It is strange that the powerband seems to differ among CRD's. Ours will chirp the tires, when the road and tires are hot. Don't even have to hold the brakes, just stomp on the pedal and this thingy takes off like a dragster!!! I could do a burnout if I turned the ESP off, but my woman would kill me since its her Baby! :shock:
I am reading some of the lift post and I am considering a 2-2.5' lift, if I can get some nitrogen filled shocks with that. That is what I am running on my 9000 lbs Ram and it feels more like a sports car than a truck. I hope to get the same handling for the Libby. I have some video from us driving in Florida on the beach, I will post a link later today.
To the sound, well having had an '02 Ram diesel and having heard some Powerstrokes, I think the CRD is quiet enough for me. I am a guy and like to hear some feedback from the engine. Yes, VW, Mercedes are quiter, but for a higher price to cover the ceramic engine covers to make it quiet.
Off to work......in my womans tire smoking, bag of bolt ratteling hot rod.

If you run the PREMIUM DIESEL here, it will quiet the CRD down a bit as well.

obviously the diesel engine is not such a big thing in America so the CRD will sound quiet compared to other diesels you will hear in America .

What I am saying to you compared to the diesel engines available in Europe today the CRD sounds like a bag of bolts.

I only ever run my Liberty on Ultimate Diesel that is ULSD but better and again I don't mind the sound of the engine at all.

Compare a CRD to a 12V Cummins ISB (like the early to 98-ish Dodge Rams)...I love that sound, but it's WAY louder than the CRD - so is a 7.3 Powerstroke (Navistar T444)

Hmmmm, I never though it was that loud....at least inside. There is a bit of rattle but not enough to inhibit a conversation. If it's loud outside, I wouldn't know and I'm not sure if I care.

A lot of that has to do with the tires and how much the are inflated. The OEM tires with a few miles on them seemed easier to spin than the BFG's I have now.

I notice ours depending on which way it is coming towards the house from, one way there is a garage along the drive, I can hear it then, sounds like the garbage truck pulling up, the other way there is nothing to bounce the sound off of and it is fairly quiet.

His won't do it at all first thing in the morning no matter how hard you drive it. Even when warm it does it maybe 50% of the time.

I think maybe you replied in the wrong thread? Sounds more like you are talking about the thread that (edit:cowcatcher) started. We were just talking about how loud a normal sounding CRD is.
