well i plan on doing a cheap exhaust mod and was wondering if anyone has done this on thier CRD. what length glasspack? is it 2.5" in and out? |

You would be about the only one here that hasn't replaced the OEM muffler. I just took mine to the muffler shop and had a Flowmaster 40 installed, instead of glass pack muffler. It is the wife's and I want to make sure that it wasn't too loud or had a drone. Most report success with straight glass pack mufflers.

It just depends on how deep your pockets are, if you are othrwise staying stock just any type of muffler that reduces back pressure will do the job. For your info it will not sound like a Hemi or a flat head V8, the thing you want to avoid is a droning effect that straight through muffler might cause.

I was watching Rusty Wallace talk about the Aero Turbine and how it doesn't drone because of the design...so that may be a good option. |

But remember Rusty was probably tlking about a gasser anyway. That said I don't think the guys here with Aero have had any drone, they just spent more money and probably bought a longer lasting muffler.

The CRD isn't that loud straight piped, but it drones. I imagine a glass pack would decrease that as I don't remember much droning in my younger gasser hot rod/jeep days. |

Dynomax makes a muffler that, they claim, has the best flow available. It is basically a perforated pipe with packing around it. Flowmaster is better than most factory mufflers but it doesn't flow the best. Gas engines seem to work better with a little back pressure. Flowmaster knows this and designs mufflers suited to gas engines. I put a complete Dynomax system on. The bends were only slightly better than the stock system. The factory system is actually pretty good and stainless. The problem is that it crimp down to 2" at the muffler. It also crimps down to about 2+" at the connection behind the flex joint. If I were going to do it again, I would cut the stock muffler off as close to welds as I could get. Buy or rent an expander to get the pipe back to 2 1/2" . Install a Dynomax muffler, they make one that is almost the same length as stock. I would also cut off the flange behind the flex pipe and use a sleeve on this joint. If you want a system bigger than 2.5", you are on your own. Summit Racing sells the Dynomax welded muffler, I have also seen these at Advance Auto. |

Got mine done with a glass pack for like 90 bucks around town Took they guy about an hour to do. Sounds really good. |

paid $45 for my glass pack, installed. It rumbles very little when idling but once Im driving you cant hear that its a different muffler. |

Has anybody who has replaced their OEM muffler noticed much gain in power or economy? BTW my CRD is in the shop with the transmission removed! The F37 got me a new TC, pump and cooler! I checked it into the shop this morning and it will be ready tomorrow. My parts were ordered on Jan.19th... |

The old man that runs a muffler shop down the road is very inexpensive. I got this 2.5"in/out glasspack installed for 40 bucks.. 25 for the glasspack adn 15 labor..no tax..lol Sounds a bit louder at idle but not noticible while driving..we're very happy with it.

When I did mine my every day driving went from 19-ish to 21-ish (hand calculated). Drivability was nicer, too. It spooled quicker and coasted better. It seemed to me the stock muffler was acting like an engine brake. |

I just did mine today, put in a glass pack (cherry bomb). 2.5" in/out. Cut off the OEM flange, so the muffle mounts to the pipe behind the CAT, no flange. Reused the stock tail pipe, but had to add an extension to go between the cherry bomb and the tail pipe. Sounds nice, just a little louder than stock. Seems the turbo can breath better and spools quicker now. I dont have a camera at the time, otherwise I would post up some pictures of my job. |
