| Post subject: | EGR solenoid |
What is EGR Solonoid on my 2003 model KJ 2.8 diesel CRD? I think I know where it is, but could someone please tell the exact position, and perhaps in simple word what it does? Should it be serviced / replaced at any mileage, there is a small filter at the bottom of it ? My EGR Solenoid is silent most of the time, but when I have been on the for for a distance, when I then stop, this solenoid makes some loud watergurgling noise. |

The EGR - is Exhaust Gas Recirculation - by recirculating a small about of exhaust gas - it dilutes the fresh air and reduces the amount of Nitrious Oxides produced - emission control. The US diesels are 05-06 2.8l - so I'm not sure they're the same as the 03 export models - but this link has pictures of the EGR dissassembled. The filter allows air in to reduce the amount of vacuum, as required. This is straight from the factory service manual, a little long but explains the function fully... "Engine vacuum is supplied by the internal mechanical vacuum pump. Vacuum for the turbocharger actuator operation is supplied from the tee at the power brake booster. Vacuum is supplied to the boost pressure reservoir. The reservoir supples vacuum to the reservoir solenoid. The solenoid supplies vacuum to the booster solenoid, and the boost solenoid supplies vacuum to the (turbo) actuator. When the engine is running battery positive voltage is supplied to the reservoir solenoid. The solenoid closes and allows vacuum to the boost pressure solenoid which modulates it’s operation in accordance to the pulse width signal supplied by the ECM. The boost pressure solenoid supplies vacuum to the (turbo) actuator or removes to atmosphere through the filter. Once the ignition is turned off, the reservoir solenoid closes to prevent vacuum reservoir bleed down." |

Probably doesn't need changed. You may try bleeding the air out of the filter housing. Mine was getting rather noisy, and I got a bunch of air out of there. It was still running OK, but it sure quieted up some after the bleeding. |

Not sure but is this not the filter that is supposed to be replaced at regular intervals? The manual refers to it I believe as the boost sensor filter. Replace at 15,000? miles intervals. |

Hey KJ79, I grew up (11-16yrs old)living in Walnut Grove .... 204th and Telegraph Trail....That area has grown like crazy. |
