 Post subject: Good-bye CRD..it's been fun :-(

Well, I did it yesterday. I traded my 06 CRD for a brand new 06.5 PKG 2 Jetta TDI. While the CRD was good for fuel economy on a jeep...I just needed something very frugal as I do a lot of traveling for work. Other than the studdering I never had any real problem with my CRD. Someone will get a very good car whoever buys it.

I have some stuff for sale though....which I will post another thread....I still have 2 OEM fuel filters, 2 OEM air filters, and 4 OEM oil filters + the unopened winter grille cover/summer bug guard from Fia.

Thank you all for all your support during my ownership of the 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD.

17k...I know it wasn't that good...but I had to look at what it would have cost me to hang on to it and try to sell it myself...also...with the PKG 2 TDI being so rare now...I had to move on it quick. I didn't want to have to pay two payments and insurance on both cars either. Also considering I have the payment on my wife's 05 Uplander and insurance for that as well.

Sure, just a hair under 16k. They would have given me 17.5k if I had leather.

Around here you could have picked up some leather seats for a few hundred and made out ahead a little more. :P

I correlated data from for sale ads, which was crazy looking, and you can ask whatever you want, I just want to put together figures of trad-ins and purchase prices......though there is much less data to work with there :x

It's been good interacting on the CRDs. :D Sorry we didn't get that chance to meet up in Maryland last month. We will miss your helpful insights on the forum. Good luck with your Jetta TDI. They get great mileage, but I bet you miss the performance in the snow and jungle surrounding the megalopolis of Washington DC and Baltimore. :lol:

Hey ...I apprecaite it. I loved the CRD, but like I said...I had to make a decision with all the travel I do for work. Mileage and good price was the reason I went with the TDI. I wll still check in from time to time. Yes, I will certainly miss the performance in the snow...but....there is an upside and downside to ever decision I guess.

Well, like I said...it would have cost me either way...if I tried to sell it outright or traded it. I didn't want the trouble of hanging onto it and just my luck it would have got whacked and then I would be stuck with it. Even with the loss...it still works out for me because I get expense checkes that more than pay for the monthly payment. Plus the jetta is much more comfortable on long trips...my legs would fall to sleep after driving for an hour or so in the jeep. And 17k wasn't too bad on the trade because many dealers don't even want them...the ones thta did were only offering 15 or 16k. I sold it to Steve Ahl of tdicars.com who is in Cali...but he and Chris at VW of Langhorne made a deal where i just take it up and drop it with Chris..and they handle the rest. I work a lot of hours so it is just too much of a pain to try to sell it myself at this point....so I paid for the convenience of trading it in.

For me, it comes to the point that if it isn't worth anything anymore, might as well keep it and drive the wheels off of it. Gotta drive something. You only loose money on it if you get rid of something. If you drive it till 250,000 miles, you are the winner. But, in your case, you have to weigh everything and who am I to debate your logic. Maybe not so long. With the Jetta you'd be getting at least 1.5 to almost 2 times the fuel economy, and fuel prices are only going to go up. In the long term, if one of your concerns is fuel economy, then dump the CRD.

Besides, VW TDI's generally have extremely good longevity (200k and beyond); something that has yet to be demonstrated with our CRD's. The TDI's also retain their value much better than the CRD.

I know a guy with an 88 XJ with the hellish peugot turbo diesel......its still running......i think he has something like 300k KM(180k mi) on it.
Though I dont know how much trouble he has had with it and he certainly doesnt just rave about it.

You don't have to explain your logic. I've been toying with the idea of a TDI myself since I feel that my TC on the 545RFE will implode again as it's slipping now. It was entirely replaced (whole 545RFE) at 25K. I'm at 41K now and debating if the TC will last until the 7/70K warranty. The differential in price between my CRD and a 2006 TDI would roughly be that of more non-warrany work on the TC and 545RFE. Somewhere in the ballpark of $6k if I were to pay out of pocket.

So you see the dilemma is "pay me now" (2006 TDI Jetta) or "pay me later" (2005 CRD new TC and 545RFE repairs).
Your going to be one of those individuals that can claim to legitimately compare the CRD with the TDI. I'm envious, but maybe not for long.
