Post subject:  Oil Change with pela

I changed the oil yesterday with the Pela oil extractor. It took longer than I expected, but in about 30 min. it removed exactly 6 qts. I changed the filter and refilled with 6 1/2 qts of Rotella and it returned to my scratched in max fill mark.

While under the jeep, I noticed some oil dripping from the rear Differential and saw a spray pattern above the yoke on the undercarriage. Good news is I have 25000 miles on her and it calls for differential fluid change in the service manual. At least the rear will be on them

I just did my first oil change after buying the CRD a week ago. I used the PELA 6000, also and ended up wishing it was a PELA 6500  . I ended up with oil sucked up into the pump and had to take it out of my shop to take it apart and deal with the mess. Then I found the oil filter and realized, because of it's orientation, this would be a mess, too. I put some aluminum foil over the members below and took the filter off. The foil was a good move.
In the end I think the PELA doesn't help much. It's slower than just using the drain plug and, since you will need a drain pan anyways for the filter mess, I think I'll just use a pan in the future. I'll keep the PELA for the TDI, boat, and New Holland.

I used a Pella when I had my Jetta TDI. Now, with my CRD, it's collecting dust in the basement. Oil changes on the CRD are simple, especially with a Fumoto valve installed. You have to get underneath the vehicle anyways in order to change the oil filter.

My Pela is only used for my TDI. Our CRuD has one of those dohickys called Fumoto Valve which is far easier than having to pump a vacuum assisted device. Ya gonna have to get under the vehicle anyway to replace the filter so a Pela doesn't make much sense unless you have a skid plate that is a PITA to remove.

No removal required.

Because of the high miles that I put on this jeep, I have to change the oil every 5 or 6 weeks. I also realize that it is no big deal to climb under to do the change, but I wanted to try the pela to see how it would move the sooty oil...and my report is that it does quite well. I'm sure I'll be changing the oil the conventional way sometime in the future, but variety is the spice of life.

I stopped by the dealer to have them look at the leaking rear differential and it is a bad pinion seal. No biggie and I'm having it repaired later this week.

Widowmaker, how many miles do you drive in those 5-6 weeks? If you are under warranty, you can easily go 12.5k miles between oil changes with Delvac oil. If not under warranty, you may wish to consider oil analysis to see if you can extend your OCI even further. There are some with TDIs who do 25k OCIs that are well supported with oil analysis.

Drewd, I average around 1200 miles per week. I was seriously considering going to 10k between oil changes, but wanted to keep a more frequent interval early on, as I learn this diesel. For the past 10 years, I felt comfortable using the 10k interval on my gas vehicles. Are the TDI's oil as black and sooty as ours?

Thanks for the suggestion

Yes, my oil on my 06 TDI turns black after 15 minutes of driving. Don't be concerned about the color of the oil, it shows that it is doing what it is supposed to be doing, that is, keeping any soot in suspension instead of allowing it to crud up the engine.

In my first TDI, I was a skeptic about 10k OCIs and my first oil analysis confirmed what others had been telling me that 10k with highway driving is very conservative. In fact, with my driving style and commute, Blackstone Labs told me that my oil was easily good for 15 and possibly 20k miles based on the 10k soot loading, low 10k mileage wear metals, and remaining protective additives in it.

10k w/ Rotella or Delvac should be no problem. A quick sample sent to the lab will save you hassle and some money down the road. There's a reason why one of the intervals is 12.5k miles....the vehicle and oil can handle it.
