So has anyone installed a boost guage: -what range of vacumn and pressure do you generally see? And: -has anyone installed either a manual boost controller or an EBC and generally how much boost do you push? |

I just found out SAMCO makes fittings for installing a nipple for any type of hose. This would be ideal for a boost guage. |

How exactly does the turbo respond to differing inputs of pressure as far as generating boost? So since as far as I can tell there is no way to release pressure, and there is no wastegate, does the engine ever pull a vacumn? |

RTStabler, mine is post. Most will agree pre turbo is the most accurate, I have always done post turbo, simpler, and I use it as a guage--which over time will establish a normal baseline on where it slowly cools down. If you do it pre-turbo you have to make sure shavings do not get into the turbo. I have done it on three turbos so far and I get plenty of info just after turbo, and still had to remove the complete exhaust to get it close in. Looking at an article of the cummins pre turbo vrs post turbo, the variance was 150 degrees between the two. I prefer a simple install which has always given me the information for cooling down before shutting down. |

Why would this info be important, it is what it is. We really have no way to modify what we have, so why have a gauge? Have had EGT gauges on diesels I've ran and maintained for many years, the only real reasons we had them on was to balance engine loads or to tell us when to do service to the systems, as they read temps at each cylinder. Otherwise they were what they were and of little importance. I think an infrared sensor looking at the turbo exhaust would be the easiest to install and maintain. |

In the same way that an oil pressure guage is useful, it is what it is, untill there is a problem..... If you suddenly started only maxing at 15psi, then you would know that you have a possible boost leak or some other problem, if you did not have the boost guage and you had a minor boost leak you might never notice. Point being its an important indicator that I would like to have. |
