Post subject:  CRD under the knife

So it was time for the 25k oil-change. My oil changes are free through my dealership (part of the extended warranty), so I take it in there. I tell my service manager (my NEW service manager after I effectively fired my old service manager that answered any problem of mine with nothing but hassle). Anyway, I tell me service manager that there's a ball-joint recall out, so he puts that down. I tell him we probably should do the F37, so he tells me that all the parts are in stock and he'll crank that out. He asks me if there's anything else going on, so I tell him that I've noticed a few drops of oil where I park during the day. I hadn't had time to get under the truck yet to check it out, so he tells me he'll check it out. Then he hands me a little piece of paper that says he's giving me a free rental while they work on my little CRD tractor.

I ask the guy at the Enterprise counter (they have an Enterprise counter in the service bay) if they have any trucks, so he hooks me up with an '07 Dodge Ram, 4-door 4WD in shiny silver. Nice. I drive to work and barely manage to squeeze it into my parking place.

About two hours later, my service guy call up and says, "We found your oil leak." Then he pauses and I'm left wondering, "What in the world..." Then he continues; "It's your turbo. We need to replace it. It'll be Monday before we can get the parts."

So, I don't know what the whole story is, but my little CRD is all taken apart and living in someone else's garage. I hope it's going to be okay. He didn't tell me what specifically was wrong with the Turbo...

I guess we'll see next week.

Same here, had the turbo replaced 2 weeks ago. It gave me some very noticeable performance improvements. I also had them replace the CAC hose since it was soaked with oil.

I never have sucha nice dealer experience though. Rental car...... *dream*......

That figures! I sell my CRD and the dealers around here get all nice and helpful.

I hope they get your Jeep back in shape quickly.

What have you been doing to your Turbo?

Hee hee. Remember those old stocker Junkyears I had on there? I...umm...wore 'em out before I put Richard's slightly used BFG A/Ts on.

Naw, I haven't been tearing it up. I will admit to experimenting with the acceleration tactics with the motor though. :-)

Sorry about your bad service BLake. That really sucks. I was heading that way with my old Advisor at Halls. I was about ready to leave them when I lucked into Baker. He's a cool guy and runs the Halls Off-Road team. He's a real Jeep guy and is taking real good care of my truck.

I'm excited about any performance improvements that come from this. I just hope nothing else is wrong with it....and I hope the F37 doesn't leave me wanting more.

Have you been diligent with the turbo cool down?

For those of you who've replaced turbos, how many miles when they 'went south'?

Thx,

RFCRD may still have had his if they would have listened when he told them his was bad. Maybe they are finally learning that all that oil is not normal  Even BVCRD that never has a problem had his intake hose replaced because it was oil soaked

I think at times this beast should have been branded as a FORD or DODGE - Fix Or Repair Daily, or, Daily Overhauls Do Get Expensive.

Over the past two years, most of the turbo failures I've heard of seem to have a common thread - discharge hose blew off, severely clogged air filter, EGR and/or FCV went south - it seems this turbo doesn't handle pressure fluctuations or differential pressures very well.

On the previous two oil changes, it looked as though my turbo was passing enough oil to go down by at least a 1/2 quart over 3000 miles, prior to that it seemed it didn't use a drop. Now, 500 miles since the last change with the ORM in place, no change in oil level so far.

I owned a 96 Passat tdi and at 20k it started using oil big time. The dealer found ounces of oil in the inter cooler and replaced the turbo (non vnt) but it turned out the be the hockey puck breather thing. And it looked just like ours on the CRD's and was also made by MANN. After that it never used a drop between changes till I sold it at 114k miles. I used dino Rotella 15-40 on it :D Also owned a 99.5 jetta tdi and it never used oil eather but the intake manifold needed cleaned every 60k miles. But that's a simple job

My turbo was replaced about a month ago. Don't be surprised if it takes alot longer than you were told. I was told the turbo was on "Galactic backorder."

Funny to hear about all the turbo replacements. They aren't that expensive to rebuild are they?

About 15,000KM, mine went kaput. I'm at 19,890KM and its just as bad as the first one, it goes in this Thursday. The dealer somehow convinced a customer to leave his CRD with the dealer for two days so they can establish a base line to compare mine to. We'll see what happens and will post on this thread with findings.

Brady,
Do you have your truck back yet?

Author:  dog_party [ Thu Apr 19, 2007 8:48 am ]
Post subject:

Yea, I got it back.

The turbo replacement parts are on backorder and DCX won't even give Halls an ETA. So they put it back together and gave it back to me.

They also found a leaking rear axle seal, which is also on backorder. So the glued it together.

They did my free oil change and...well, I was stupid enough to say "yes" when they asked me if I wanted new air & fuel filters and an engine flush at the same time. Sure...$223 later, and we're nearly in the poor house...oh, did I mention that Kristen was laid-off and we owed $2500 in taxes because of (Pay The) Capital (More Money To Waste) Gains tax?

At least Baker gave me the rental for the duration. He's a good Advisor.

So they did the ball joint recall and the truck seems more sure-footed. But I might be imagining that since I did drive a 4-door Dodge Ram for a week. Of course the KJ seems more sure-footed...right? I can't tell, but it makes me feel better knowing it's done.

Now, on to the F37...you know what? I'm going to start a new thread for that. Let's just say...Brady No Likey.

I have yet to do any of the recalls. I'm waiting till the last minute. Don't feel bad about laying out the cash for the filters and stuff. I changed all of them myself with the exception of fuel filter. I bought the fuel filter for 48 bones and then it cost me another 50 bones to have it replaced. It is a fairly simply job but I don't like playing with fuel and electical systems.

Sorry to read about the back taxes. I know of a great CPA who might be able to help you. He is what is called an Enrolled Agent which means he is one step above a CPA when it comes to taxes. If you want his name give me a call.

That's a lot for Capital Gains. Was it short term CG if you sold a house?

Author:  dog_party [ Thu Apr 19, 2007 9:29 am ]
Post subject:

Yea, I didn't own the house for 2 years. The rules used to be that I could sell, and then reinvest the capital, but not anymore. They don't have enough of my money to misappropriate. Now it's a flat rule. If you don't own a house for 2 years, you pay Capital Gains. Pbbt.

Thanks for the CPA offer Mike, but I'll pass. We have a family friend that did ours. She charged us $200+ for the task. Not impressed. This was the first year I've done a service...probably be the last too. It's TurboTax for me from this point on.

Read my long-winded F37 report. Keep holding off as far as I'm concerned. Maybe do the ball-joint recall next time you're in for Oil.
