Our little rigs are truly impressive little tow beasts. I was assisting my brother with the transplant of a 440 big block into his "swamp donkey" and was the chase car on the first test drive. As is usaual with any swap, there were a few wrinkles to be ironed out. His fuel delivery was pooched and needed a tow back to the shop. A little background...the shop is on the folks ranch which sit atop a hill that is about 1000 vertical feet rise in less tha a quarter mile. we were at the bottom of the grvel road hill. Little Brother - do you think it will pull it? Me - It should have enough grunt Little Brother - yeah, but will it have enough mass? So I hooked onto this: ![]() And yanked it up the loose gravel road with this: ![]() I disabled ESP put it in 4hi and spewed gravel everywhere, but managed to keep up th momentum and got it back to the new fuel pump it so much needed. These little turbo diesels are awesome. |

I tried with the ESP on and found that it wanted to reduce the power too much while maintaining traction. On...it stopped the pull due to traction loss and power reduction. Off...lots of wheel spin but allowed me to "walk" the front/rear wheels around to find traction and keep moving ahead. I have found with some types of loose surfaces wheel spin helps. The pig truck was too heavy to let momentum wane and the ESP cut power dramatically and quickly. |

I think he needed the wheel speed to keep up momentum. If he had chose 4lo, the donkey may have dragged him backwards down the hill. |

BVCRD, You got it. Once I got the truck moving I wanted to keep it that way! I was mightily impressed at the torque...so was little brother. BTW those are 38.5 Swampers and that Dodge has ove 12" of total lift (8 suspension and 4 body). Each tire/wheel is about 100+ lbs. |
