I think just about everyone but the US still has the CRD, I wouldn't expect to see it back again, the reason they quit building them is still there, with no technical fixes yet that I've seen being adapted to the 2.8L.

So what you're saying is, Jeep has not (yet) adapted the 2.8 CRD to meet the 2007+ US EPA Emissions.

Is this correct ??

It has been strongly rumored that the 08 Liberty will have a CRD option late this year or early next. They will likely be using the new Blutec engine from Mercedes. The Liberty itself is being redesigned for 08, and will likely have several years beyond that of production as a result.

The engine in the next Liberty will be the 2.8L... again... surely nobody here wants to pay $5000 for the MB engine I'm sure. It is a premium engine and the KJ/KK ain't a premium vehicle.

I have difficulty believing that simply because it won't meet emissions hardly anywhere with a large market. With most of the northeast adopting California's standards, they'd be lucky to even have 40 states covered, with most of the ones not covered being the most populated...

Personally, yes, I'd pay for the nicer Mercedes engine, but perhaps I am alone in that...

But isnt the 2.8 being redesigned as well? Maybe this Panther series of engines will meet the standards.

I think MrMopar, our inside man, said that they are set to use the 2.8L (in the Wrangler and Liberty/cheroke), whether or not they can sell it in the USA. Remember, they've been selling that 2.8L in Europe straight through for years.

Sigh.

Europe is also raising the bar on polution standards. All it takes for something to happen is a need. Hang the right junk on our 2.8 and I'm sure it can be done :D

The 2008 Jeep Liberty is going to be premiered tomorrow April 4 at the New York Auto Show. Hopefully we'll know more then.

Let's hope it's not just another Nitro. :?

All the new CRD platforms (KA-Nitro,KK-Liberty,JK-Wrangler,RT-Minivan) are using the new Panther engine which is much more capable than the current 2.8L, cleaner re: emissions, smaller/lighter, etc.

The KK is riding on the same chassis as the Nitro with a slightly longer wheelbase. Same axles, same trannys, better T-case (4-low, electronic shifting).

Only thing holding back the return of CRD platforms in the US is NOx emissions. Urea isn't considered a "friendly" option until '09/'10MY because of the added complexity. There's talk of trying for '08, but no luck as of yet.

I think I will just "stretch" my current KJ CRD if I find I need more room 8)

For 2007 the Euro Spec KJs with CRDs come with PM Filters.

While we're dreaming, I'd like another 2500lbs of towing capacity w/ the diesel. :) Everything else about the new Libby I like. (Well, 'cept the price.)

The JK w/ a 2.8L would be a gift from god... :D

The limitations on towing capacity is not because of the engine. Trust me, even with the rated 5000lbs behind the CRD you have more than enough extra power. I bet the engine could tow 7500 without breaking a sweat.

But the Liberty is small. Short wheelbase. And even though the Liberty is heavy for it's size (My Limited CRD is more than 5000lbs empty) it is still a light vehicle when it comes to towing.

Combine the light weight and the short wheelbase and you get real problems with large trailers.

And I am not even addressing brakes or suspension.

But as far as power goes, the CRD is a monster - tows better than some V8 pickups I have driven...

The liberty can pull a LOT more than the 5000 lb rating in the US. I heard that the CRD is rated for well over 7000 lbs (US) in Europe, because of more restrictive European laws regarding speed and brakes on trailers. Understand that when you're toting that much behind, you can get into a tail waggin' the dog situation very easily if you're not careful.

Right, right... no disputing this @ all. I was just curious as one of the "new fangled" options is a tow assist programming of the stability control, so I was hoping/dreaming that we'd get that "extra" 2500lbs.

I've heard this too, but I've only ever seen reference to 3500 KILOS, which I had just assumed was a typo of sorts...

A lot of this depends on the dynamics of the trailer. I have a 6x12 enclosed w/ two 3500lb axles on it. Loading that up to capacity would have a VERY different effect on the KJ than if I was to hook up a 27' Travel Trailer of the same weight. As it stands right now, I don't ever forsee a need to exceed the 5k rating of my current KJ... but that extra 2500lbs would just be icing on the cake that might swing me to spend the $$ to "upgrade" to the yet non-existant CRD KK. ;)

The Jeep UK web page reporting the specs for a 2007 Cherokee CRD with auto transmission says it has a 3,360 kg towing limit for a braked trailer. Google tells me 3360 kg equates to 7,407 lbs.
