I am looking for some insight and advice from you folks. Last week my 05 CRD threw a CEL. I have 39K mi on the vehicle and only the EHM mod . While I have tried the ORM, I have been diligent about the unplug, plug to keep the CEL from coming on. I called the dealer and set up to go in to have an analysis and fix. I undid the EHM the nite before my appointment and drove into work. My wife was to meet me at the dealer and as we left work to go to the dealer, I noticed that no CEL was present. I called the service manager and he indicate that there may be stored "soft DTCs" but if there was not an active CEL, all they could do was to determine what the code was but could not fix a problem. I drove the vehicle without issue and replaced the EHM. I drove around this week without issue and took a trip this weekend of ~300 mi. ON the trip out, I averaged 25.7 mpg. while running ~ 70mph. When we reached our destination, we stopped for ~ 7hrs. after which time, we left. I started the vehicle and immediately the CEL came on. Ran fine and actually on the road home, my milage increased to 29.5 mpg while driving at least 75 mph. Today, I stopped by the Advanced AutoParts and had them run the code. They were "Turbo underboost" and "Low EGR Flow". While there, I removed the EHM and pulled the IAT/MAP and cleaned it. It was dirty but but not as bad as the first time II had cleaned it ~ 8000mi ago. I drove home (<3 mi) and put the vehicle in the garage. I killed the engine, waited ~ 10 min. and then recycled it and started the engine again. Interesting, no CEL. I drove ~ 10 miles and still no CEL. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Doug

That was what I anticipated. Guess I will take it in and see what the dealer says. Thanks

Could you have gotten the CEL because of the ORM? Disabling the MAF sensor messes with the EGR AFCV.

I suppose that the ORM could have popped the CEL - BUT - I tried that over 3 weeks ago and the CEL showed up late last week. Dealer indicated that the EGR was going bad and that it is not covered under warranty at this point (39Kmi). I am considering either buying a new one and doing the install myself or taking this one down, cleaning and replacing the original unit, or just disabling the sucker somehow (I know--- ORM). I do hate looking at the CEL though. This can get expensive in maintenance/replacement cost every 24K mi. Any advice/opinions/suggestions?

How much does an EGR cost?

Anyone have a picture of it and where it's located?

I've got to get a darn service manual!! :)

So, $200 for the part, and you've got to remove the airbox, and turbo plumbing to get to it, or does the turbo have to come off too?

I've got to see some diagrams of this sucker and start looking for a discount parts seller or a cross referenced part number.

If it fails when I'm out of warranty, I'll fix it myself and won't cry a tear.

Could it possibly the EGR flow control valve :?: As I understand it most EGR problems are caused by the Flow Control Valve. I think yours, if original, has plastic gears and the later and replacements have metal gears.

Thanks for the diagram Skywarn. I remembered seeing it previously but couldn't come up with the thread. At least I know the territory as to where to start disassembly if I should decided to tackle the issue myself. Somewhere on the forum there was a discount source for Jeep/Mopar parts that listed the EGR valve. Haven"t found that yet either but I will post when and if I do. Thanks for all the input here. I will let you know how this turns out. I had actually forgotten about the FCV as being a potential for the problem here. I presume that diagnosis can be more clearly differentiated by the dealer???

It is my understanding that the EGR stuff isn't under warranty past the 3/36, even if you have the 2005 7/70 warranty.

we use the one CRD as a utility vehicle(going places, pulling grain wagons,etc.).Also have 2 Duramax Chevy's+ 1 Dodge Cummins 1 tons. It's a fairly good size operation with 19k acres this year. The EGR mod mod is quite simple actually. As I said ,Just use a piece of 3/4" heater hose from in front of the FCV(I used a PVC fitting in the CAC hose)to the inlet on the EGR.It gives you a neutral pressure flow, but the sensor doesn't know the difference! As for the fuel filter,it's just an off the shelf Stanadyne FM100 with a long 2 micron element. You can add a glass water separater or a WIF sensor if want,I didn't,just a 120 watt heater.I heard about this site from our maintenance guy recently+haven't remembered about it till last week. There is some interesting stuff on here!Later,Malcolm PS the CRD with 83k on it is my wifes work truck.

might be a start to the end?

Just a follow-up to close the loop on this thread. I got my CRD back from the dealer today. They seem to have a reasonably good diesel mechanic that services the CRD and the Cummins vehicles. It, as suggested earlier in the thread, was another EGR gone bad. This is the third in just at 39K mi. I do not have an extended warranty and I was pleasantly surprised as the work was done under warranty, presumably the 7/70 powertrain. This fact may be important to others of you with EGR issues over the 3/36 warranty period. I have gotten in contact with the elusive Farmboss via PM and understand a bit better what his workaround fix was. Seems he is farming about 19K acres, pretty good reason to be busy this time of year down there. Probably going to give the mod a try. I do enjoy the CRD but this will get expensive eventually if the failures persist every 15K mi or so.
